water cylinder in attic

    Hi,

i will be installing solar in my new build, i want to locate the dual coil cylinder in the attic. i will be going with a pressurised system so i can put the tank and cylinder at the same height roughtly i.e. attic floor.
i plan on putting a small rad in the linen cupboard to act as the dump for the pressurised system (i may not be explaining it right so please correct me if im wrong).

can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or not, i spoke with someone and they said its not advisable to have a pressureised system in attic incase it blows?????
he also said to put tank, cylinder and gas boiler outside in a boiler house, but would this not mean the run of pipe from the panels would be very long?

can anyone advise me if this will work or any better idea?

    cheers
    Rob

    Rob,

If your system is pressurised then your cylinder will be an unvented cylinder and designed to withstand higher pressure. Any competent installer will pressure test the system to well above the working pressure, so I wouldn't worry unduly about a "blow-up". Not to say there couldnt be a leak at any stage, but that can happen in gravity systems too!

What I would say is be very careful about noise - with a pressurised system the pump will run often, and if sitting on the joists the vibration & noise will transmit all over the top floor if you're not careful.

Another problem - you need to be careful about flushing toilets - if power fails you will have no water storage, not sure that is in compliance with building regs/DOE. You may need to have a separate storage tank with gravity feeds to the toilets.

Could you look at putting the water tank higher up off the attic floor? then you might get a low cylinder in. Need to keep bottom of cold tank above top of cylinder, otherwise airlock. Another option might be a horizontal cylinder but not sure if you can get them twin-coil, but you could get two of them and run them in series, then the cold tank wouldnt need to be too high up..

    Hope that helps/confuses?

No problem with it in attic, be sure and allow for the extra weight of a full cylinder.
