Just watched six one on rte and seen that Philip Deignan's win only got one line at the end. Its absolutely pathetic, if it was some irish golfer we 'd have greg allen rambling on for ever bout it on radio and TV.........

    Yep.

    It's infuriating.

But cycling is not alone in this lack of media exposure in Ireland :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

Not just cycling, F1 and Tennis didnt get a mention on last Sat main sports bulliten.

+1 on golf. Lets not forget Colm Murrey giving us an update on the new toilet blocks in Leopardstown!

Cycling is only worthy if its the Tour and theyve got time to mention it or some spectacular crash from Vuelta/Giro that someone in their newsroom has spotted.

I wonder will Deignan be nominated for RTE sportsperson?

In the 80's you could watch the tour, dublin city marathon, roland garros, etc etc on RTE,now totally meaningless champions league matches whereby everyone knows who is going to get through from the group stages anyway is all we have.

    Spot on chief.
Does anybody here genuinely expect anything better from a shambles of a state-run organisation.
Also,TG4 have put both RTV and TV3 to shame with their excellent coverage of not only sporting events, but factual documentaries also.
    Chapeau to Deignan though.

Apparently Deignan is going to be speaking on the "Off the Ball" programme on Newstalk between 8 and 9 tonight.

Deignan already spoke to Des Cahill at about 6.45 on Drivetime.

Typical RTE with the bogball on this weekend, it doesnt matter what happens in the world of sport , GAA will be the top story this week

Very stupid attitude to have when GAA i the national sport in this country so of course it's going to be the main focus when the biggest game of the year is on!

@velo2010....was there any Irish participation in either?!...no there wasn't....atleast they mentioned Deignans win!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

this is the first grand tour stage win since stephen roche in 1992 ffs really it deserved more than a 1 liner on the news its just typical. anyway they dont like him cos he's from donegal, sure half of rte thinks its in the north anyway

i am sickened by the lack of coverage

and this happened today not something that is going to happen on sunday thats what news is for ....

4 stills on 9 o'clock news slightly better

No coverage of GUI national finals also, amateur golf's showpiece event and no interest from the broadcast media.

Imagine that. The biggest game in the season of the biggest sport in the country and it's headline news.

    Astounding.

to denigrate another sport / pastime does nothing to ingratiate your chosen sport / pastime

be nice, make friends , be an ambassador for cycling

I really really wish that I could have watched those highlights without knowing the result.

Well done OP. Around here we try to use
    spoiler tags
within threads that discuss stages that people are likely to watch later in the day. That sort of gets pissed all over if you decide to announce wins in the title of your thread.

I avoid threads relating to the vuelta, but it shouldn't be necessary to avoid the cycling forum altogether.

again thanks. well done. brilliant. genius.

why should common courtesy come between you and a good complain about the meeja?

But the All Ireland final is the pinnacle of our amateur irish-only sport. Of course this epic battle that will be remembered for all september should be chief on the sports news.

    Bogball is bigger than hurling?

If that's true I'm withdrawing my application for citizenship, as I've been grossly mislead.

I dunno why RTE show so much gaa. If I wanted to see over grown men chase a ball and kick lumps out of each other, I'd go to the local ball-and-lump-kicking center. Oh wait, that's the GAA club.

Broadcast Media Bad, Print Media Not as Bad.

The Irish Times yesterday seemed to just pull a news report from Reuters rather than have an expert write a piece for them. Although they've rectified that today with Shane Stokes providing a good piece.

Folks the reason there is so much coverage of GAA is down to the appetite for that coverage.
85000 people will descend on Croker on Saturday, that is some crowd for a country of our size. I would be surprised if almost 1m people do not tune into rte and watch the game. The GAA is huge, they are our national games for a reason.

It does little to promote a sport, to belittle another sport.

Now as rgds a media reaction, Deignan features very prominantly on both IT and Indo today.
Watched highlights last night, great to see. Looked like he lost it at one stage, then he pulled back. Smart man in dressing like one would for a cycle in Ireland. Apparently was 10-11 degrees yday.

Hang on a sec there. I was watching RTE2 late news and they had a piece on the victory, albeit no coverage, just pictures accompanied by an interview of about 30 secs. It's obvious that they updated the story for later editions as more material came to hand.

Tv 3 this morning had pictures, showed deignan catching kreuziger, and then breaking off with him before out sprinting him, although his pronouncation of kreuziger left alot to be desired
I think pictures are only available once a certain time has passed. Well done to lad rode brillant race seems very clever rider.

Bringing down other sports isn't the way forward. I play soccer and golf, I also attend hurling matches. Whilst I don't give a monkeys about Gaelic football, a game i did play (in kk this is where all the really crap hurlers go), I do realise that it'll be worthy of half the sports news on Sunday. I'm sure other people here will be playing other sports over the winter.
