Golf 1.6 16v versus 1.6 8v

Hey guys just a question or two or the VW 1.6 engines

My 02 Golf is fitted with the 1.6 16v engine. Great engine I must say. It seems that VW and Audi did not continue this engine for long but continued with the 1.6 8v one for years afterwards. Right up untill 2 years ago.

Anyone know why they chose the underpowered and old 8v unit??

Was it something to do with the TSI engines they brought in?

Anyone know why most Golfs are fitting with the old 8v unit and not the 16v??

Was it a spec thing? Mine is a highline model?

Before the TSI engines they had a 1.6 FSI engine. That was 16v. The 8v is a heap of dung and belongs in the early 90's.

Dont think mine is a TSI though. Its just a 16v. Didnt know they had a TSI on the mk iv

The 8v was still on the go until 2 years ago, in the Passat anyway.

I would suspect it was kept going because it was cheaper?

8 valve is pretty refined to be fair

Cheaper to manufacture would be the main reason I'd think.

Refined if you get out of a Ferguson 35x after a 50 mile trip...

Well considering how crap the 1.4 litre 16 valve unit it then yes it is to an extent.

There was/is a 16v version of the non FSi 1.6 alright. see the wiki article on the Mk4
    1.6 AVU / BFQ I4 SOHC 8V 1,595 cc (1.595 L; 97.3 cu in) 102 PS (75 kW; 101 hp) @ 5,600 rpm 148 N·m (109 lb·ft) @ 3,800 rpm 2000-2006
    1.6 AUS / AZD / ATN / BCB I4 DOHC 16V 1,598 cc (1.598 L; 97.5 cu in) 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) @ 5,700 rpm 148 N·m (109 lb·ft) @ 4,500 rpm 2000-2006

Apparently the 16v version had 3 bhp more at 105bhp:rolleyes:

It may well have been a spec thing but tbh i imagine most joe soaps wouldnt have had a blind clue what the difference was

That 16v version of the 1.6 is still available, a couple of cars come to mind, the new SEAT ibiza and the new Skoda fabia

It is not however in the new polo so that indicates it will soon be consigned to the history books. Replaced in the new polo by a brand new 1.2TSi with 105bhp:)

Er, no. That's the engine in the A3, while it's dead as a dead thing, it's also very quiet.
The 8 valve in the Fiat punto is also silky smooth in comparison to most 4 cylinder cars.
