Despite the vast majority of things going up in price there again() I spotted cases of 50 DVD+Rs in Tescos in Mahon for €4, so I picked two cases up.

They also had skittles-195g bags for 65c!

Might take a closer look at this one in my local Tesco later

I've used those Tesco DVDs before and the quality is shocking. The ones that didn't fail to write in the first place only lasted a few reads before turning into coasters.

If you get 20 working its still cheap,
And coasters are expensive these days :p

€4 in the bin I reckon. I wouldn't touch Tesco blank media again.

or maybe his drive is just CDRW and was trying to burn in a DVDRW media:D

or also was trying to fit an 8.5gb data, in that case you'll need a dual layer media dude.
times like this, sometimes its just better be quiet if you dont have any good thing to say..rather acting like a genius

    :)

Made in China, with fake 'media codes', they come up as Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, but they're not..

The Tesco double layer are the same, Chinese made with fake media codes.

Brand means nothing when it comes to blank media, it is the manufacturer that counts.

jackbauer24, gambiaman, care to share media burn scans of the Tesco DVD's before jumping on another poster's bones?

There's a few threads on Tesco media over at the CDFreaks forum. The quality ranges from so-so to downright awful, depending on the brand of burner used.

It's a false economy, try reading Data from them six or twelve months after burning them, good luck.

I know they maybe fakes but never really have problems with them, the dual layers i bought about 10 packs and never had an unsuccessful burn after i updated my drives firmware

I did buy about 60 of the Dual Layer, cheap for what they were, I just burn them slow.. and give them away mostly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,371 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

I burn them at 4x and use them for xbox360 games which for cheap media working is amazing

You guys, you're focusing on the wrong thing here.

65c skittles! Do you think tesco.ie would deliver 8 bags of them to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,396 ✭✭✭lindtee

I knew this thread was going to turn like this!! I was going to ask people to not be posting about how crap the dvds are! We all know how crap everyone thinks they are already...

Its not, friend of mine wanted something burned one day and arrived down with Tesco discs, i tried about 5 and none of them worked so i gave up, i prefer to use reliable media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim myself.

Just took your challenge and your wrong.
I'm now watching a Tesco 8X DVD burned about three years ago.
Also tried another one from about 1 1/2 years ago that has an mkv and that plays perfect as well.
I could try more but I don't need to, I know they will all work.
That statement you made is defintiely false.

I don't do a lot of writing to optical media, but I have used those Tesco brand discs and never had a single coaster. TBH, I find if I ever had to do a few burns in a single sitting then I might run in to problems (which to me suggests, the drive or the burning software).

I can't remember the last time I had a coaster, it must be about 6+ years now.

I have never used Tesco DVD-rs but I swear by Verbatim. I don't usually recommend Harvey Norman for a bargain alert, but they sell Verbatim media at a very reasonable price, usually either €8.99 or €9.99 for a pack of 25 disks. I have never had a Verbatim coaster, at any speed up to 16x. If you keep your DVD burner clean and dust free (ie, don't leave the drawer open) and use good burning software such as Nero or any of the Opensource alternatives, you will not produce coasters with branded media.

For extra assurance, a good rule of thumb is to burn your disks at half the rated speed, so if they say 16x then burn at 8x. If you do not plan to use the disk for additional data then make sure to finalise it when burning. And, often overlooked, make sure to name your files and folders reasonably, and not too long or with strange characters!

Got to agree. Verbatim's are very good.

Why the aggressive tone, or the right\wrong attitude, if you look at my post, I said depending on the burner used, and the speed, if a particular burner cannot handle the write strategy, due to a false media code, the burn will be of an 'unknown' quality, depending on the speed the media is written at, the burner.. and the base quality of the media itself.

Tesco did sell genuine media in the past, the truth is, they no longer do. It isn't 'Tesco' media, that doesn't exist, they brand a manufacturer and buy a media lot in, to sell on.

At the moment, the media sold is from mainland China, with fake media codes.

Again, I'll say, burn the current media at the rated speed, with data. Come back to it in a year. See how you get on.

I bought 2 X 50 Cakes of Tesco DVD-R's for €4 each ... I can honestly say it's the worst €8 Ive ever spent ... they are complete and utter rubbish. Even if you do manage to get a "successful burn" , 9 outta 10 times the playback on the DVD player is jumpy , pixelated , and basically unwatchable ... they are the worst blank media I have ever used.

The Skittles were lovely though ..... mmmmmmmmmmm Skittles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭mathie

You'd be better off squashing ths skittles down, putting them in your dvd burner and burning away.

    Far more reliable.

They had 2 spindles of 25 of Verbatim dvd+r for €10, in Harvey Normans (Little Island) yesterday. Beside the tills in baskets.

I picked up a 10 pack (spindle) of Maxell DVD-R single layer from Lidl the other day, cost E2.50, not sure if the quality is any better but I've been burning them with no problem.

crumbs, there a while back they had spindles of 50 for €14 in Blanch and Swords. Maybe they're still knocking around though?

Regarding Tesco dvds, I've used em and they seem to be OK for the most part. In fact, sometimes they burned better than my Verbatims or Ridata discs, lol.
That said, I think the trick is to just have them for duplicates/general use. Put your more important data on Verbatim/Datwrite/Ridata etc.
