'So Near and Yet So Far Moment' in Irish sporting history

Following on from the Greatest Irish Sports Person vote currently on RTE, I thought we should expand discussion on the other issues here too.

I've posted the two issues separately to try and keep them apart!!

For me there are probably a number of matches in the EOS era of Irish Rugby, where we should have done much better to win championships and Grand Slams.

    RWC 1991 against Australia too.

It's funny how these moments don't stick too well in the memory - perhaps I've blanked them out.

It doesn't seem right to call it "so far" but i'd have to say Sonia's silver in Sydney - when you think about it it's shocking she never won Olympic gold... Hell let's put Barcelona and Atlanta in there too!

Macedonia scoring a 93rd minute equaliser in 1999 to prevent us qualifying automatically for Euro 2000 :(

You often hear about Atyeo's 90 minute equaliser for England at Daymount after Ireland had lead for 87 minutes in the 50's.

Nah disagree about Sydney, she ran her fastest ever time and was beaten by a better athlete on the day, couldnt have done much more. Barcelona, she was young and inexperienced and wasnt the favourite going into that race anyway. Atlanta I will accept being in this category, but not the other two.

    So many to chose from:

    1) Ireland V Aus in 91 (rugby)
    2) Ireland v France in 2007 (rugby)
    3) Ireland V Macedonia in 99 (football)
    4) Ireland V Spain in 2002 (football)
    5) Ireland V Belgium in 1981 (football)

What a fluke too! Might have been easier to take if it was a good goal.
