Hi all now that the winter is coming soon i am looking ahead at some winter gear so i am looking for a pair of leg warmers. I had a look at the Aldi stuff this morning and none of it fits me. So i am looking for a decent pair of leg warmers or some thermal tights. My question on the tights do you wear them under your cycling shorts or over them.aHas anybody any recommenditions on a good pair of either option.

    Under, always under

edit: wait, I thought you were talking about leg warmers.

If the tights have a chamois, then you don't need to wear shorts.
If there is no chamois, then wear shorts under the tights.

instead of..... if you get tights with a built-in Chamois, which most of them have.

How do leg warmers + bib shorts compare to bib tights in terms of warmth and comfort?

    very comfortable
warmth: bibshorts tend not be as warm as winter tights since they are for summer use. So I use shorts and leg warmers up to a point, then switch to tights. Sometimes I have long-johns on under the tights when it's very cold.

A good set of leg warmers mimics tights very well but they really are only usable until about 4 degrees imho

As mentioned. Leg warmers are great in themselves but your upper legs feel a bit cold in really chilly weather.

I put on a pair of cheap Lidl leggings over the shorts during the bitter weather last winter and found them snug.
The leggings actually are a bit too warm in normal weather!
Only a very shallow chamois in the Lidl pair anyway so no bulky a*rse problem.

I have the DHB leg warmers, do the job pretty well but even with rubber grippers I find that any warmer will eventually stretch and require frequent pulling over the course of a ride.

DHB now do knee warmers. Keeping the knees warm is the main thing.

Do you post this kind of stuff on purpose?

No, of course not. You have to accept that certain aspects of cycling, namely lycra and riding (even some of the phrases, "taking a pull"), lend themselves to dirtier connotations. I couldn't phrase it another way. If you read it from a cycling point of view, it makes perfect sense, no?

You just have a one track mind my friend.

Besides the fact that the shorts themselves are less insulated I generally find all-in-one tights to be more comfortable than a shorts+warmers combo. Warmers are still a great buy (I have multiple sets of arm/knee/leg warmers) to extend the use of your gear and particularly for when conditions may vary throughout the day or indeed a longer ride (e.g. start off with them in the morning and take them off.) They would also make a lot of sense if for example you were going on a multi-day cycle- you could just wash/change your shorts and re-wear the warmers, carrying multiple sets of tights would be far more bulky.
