Anyone out there own a HD Media Recorder/Player?

There seems to be a lot of them floating around at the moment; people tell me to be careful which one to buy, as you can have trouble playing certain video files even if they say it plays that type(freezing), music (poor sound), slow scrolling, difficulty setting up folders etc…

Looking for advice on which one to buy? Any recommendations?

have been looking at the ICY BOX IB-MP305 and Asus O!Play HDP-R1

not sure what to get if any of these, subtiles and mkv support are important for me, must at least be capable of placing more that one line at a time..
not sure what your prefeances are but look in to these
the icy box has a larger version out as well with internal hdd

The two companies around the longest that make these are Popcorn Hour and TViX. Check out the articles on www.mpcclub.com for reviews and comparisons.

My Xtreamer is in the post so will post up some info when it arrives - doesn't record but supposed to be one of the best players going, especially for the price!

Thanks for the informative replies folks!

Even more confused which one to go for now…

Having looked up your recommendations in detail, I must say I spotted a few functions that I’d like my box to boast:

    - UpnP:

On the Xtreamer this looks VERY easy to use/ do?

    SEE SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hllim4eG_mM&feature=related

    - Applications + Skins:

Seems to be some nice skins/ applications for some of the bigger brands… as well as support + forums + updates…

    SEE SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3YmTeOHEWo

    - Media Portal:

Never knew you could search YouTube, Flickr etc… this is brilliant!

    SEE SAMPLE:

    - Internet radio streaming:

Can you add your own radios stations to the Popcorn Hour? As in small regional/ local radio stations?

    SEE SAMPLE:
    http://thesalmonfarm.org/blog/2008/05/11/add-streaming-radio-to-the-popcorn-hour-network-media-tank/

    - WIFI:

    - Can I surf the web at all? I know I can read RSS feeds, brilliant! How about downloading movies from Rapidshare etc? Or is it simply for to play movies from your hard drive on your PC etc…?

    - Speed:

The Popcorn Hour C200 looks really speedy? To navigate around and to load…

    SEE SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCoxrn7EUxw&feature=related

So to cut a long story short, I see Popcorn Hour are launching a new box soon: Popcorn Hour C200 Network – do you think this will encompass all and more?

Sorry if there’s any stupid/ wrong questions there – I am a total novice to these boxes…

    Thanks Wossack !

So i guess the only real benefit is that it navigates faster (bigger NAND / Ram)?

    I know it also has...

-- Blu-ray: but i doubt i really need this now?
-- video codex: a couple of extra ones, but's let's be honest i doubt i'll be using anything other than the standard: MP3, MP4, AVI, etc...

It doesnt sound like much of an upgrade for the price difference, but I would be concerned that PCH would stop developing/upgrading the a110, and focus on the c-series
