I'm in the arse end of West Galway (west siiiide). I'm in my in-laws holiday home until the weekend. I brought a usb 3g modem from a well known mobile carrier so I have internet connectivity. The problem is that I've only got an EDGE connection (you can probably guess which well known mobile carrier I'm talking about). I need suggestions on what sites are friendly for slow connections. I have m.boards.ie, m.rte.ie and m.kotaku.ie. I need something accessible for those unable to process large sites and interesting enough to keep me from going mad.

Oh wise people of the internet - advise me on how to best kill the next couple of days.

    Hitchhike to Dublin ?

A fine idea. However, that could cause long term arguments with herself.

I was more thinking "ooh you totally forgot about m.awesome.com - you'll find so many things to read the time will just fly by".

p.s. I haven't actually checked m.awesome.com and take no responsibility for what might be there

If you go into the settings, you can change the Network type to 3G only, (it's probably currently set to Any or GPRS only)

Then you won't get Edge connection at all, only HDSPA or UTMS... which is slightly better, but not much, will speed things up a bit though...

I would suggest you try out Opera as a net viewer too.
For such cases as yourself. there is an inbuilt unique "TURBO" feature for speeding up the downloading/viewing of sites.
Worth testing anyway to see will it make a difference to your particular situation.

lynx is a text based browser so less bandwidth

firefox has an addon for image show/hide so you only download pics when needed, noads and flash block are also good

on siteviewer.ie / comreg you can see the location of mobile phone masts , which privider they are with and if they have 3G so you can get closer or better line of sight ,

try the usb dongle on a longer cable / outdoors / higher to see if better , cut a section off the top of a 2L coke bottle and cover one side in thin foil , put the usb cable in the neck of the bottle so the dongle is in the focal point of the mirror, you might get a better signal, if not you have killed some time anyway,

go to guttenberg and download a classic book you've been meaning to read for ages.

    if your browser supports it
    telnet://towel.blinkenlights.nl

or open a dos prompt and
    telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

Why not give the laptop a break for a few days? The internets will still be here next week... (probably)

How sad to need ANY internet access for a few days.
Why not do something else instead of looking at sites just for the sake of killing time?

Thank you for that judgement on how I spend my time - it was most useful.

I've a ebook reader loaded with a few classics (and also some terrible sci-fi and fantasy) that I'm working my way through at the moment so it's not all bad but I thought I'd see if there was anything I was missing in terms of low bandwidth internet browsing.

As for the other comments on how to improve the connection - thank you but I'm stuck with the edge for the moment. It appears that the 3g rollout hasn't gotten quite this far yet!
