Left College - Situation with Job seekers Allowance

    Hi,

Mods I apologize in advance if this has already been answered but I haven't been able to find a situation such as mine in the search engine.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I am not able to continue on into my 3rd year of college, I have to defer my place for the year. I must get a job to support myself. I was unable to work Summer just gone due to illness and a stay in hospital. For my previous Summers and undertook volunteer work and jobs at Summer camps so I have not built up any tax credits etc.

My understanding from www.welfare.ie is that I'm entitled to the job seekers allowance but I'm not completely sure if this is the case.

Will I be able to apply for this if I haven't paid tax in the past? Also I still live at home so I suppose I will also be means tested with my parents income? Pity they don't take the fact that it literally is just a roof over my head into consideration. Is it possible that I may not be entitled to anything due to the means test?

I'm sorry for the long winded post, I just feel very lost and don't know where to go.

    Thanks for your time,

    Shiv.

jobseeker's allowance is means tested and your tax contributions do not come into play.

your parents' income will be taken into account only if you are under 25.

Thanks for clearing that up for me? So in theory I may be entitled to nothing because of what my parents earn?

    In theory, yes.

But they give a pretty generous allowance for a family with two parents.
