So I'm thinking a new winter bike

as a means of getting a few miles into my legs, and getting back into cycling.

I have my old race bike - trek 5500, complete with a dodgy headset. But it's been kept 'reasonably' well over the years, and probably pass as a race bike next year if I took the big plunge and for this reason I hadn't really considered sticking mudguards on it and using it. Having seen these today, maybe I should just hack around on the trek?

Otherwise my option is my old winter bike, which is full ultegra with a cracked frame. I would need, by my reckoning, a frame, fork, ahead set, BB, and seatpost, stem, and prob handlebars - plus the cost of Mr.Skefflington stripping the old bike, cleaning and rebuilding.

Budget is a big issue here for me.

Back to my chums in Ribble, I could
take this frame (complete with forks)

    £135
    Ahead set
    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=RIBBHSTR200000000000
    £15
    BB
for about a score, although model tbc given uncertain of frame size and compatibility with a ten year old chainset.
    £20
presumably stem, handlebar and seatpost can be pulled together for a pittance
    £35?
mudguards as above £22, handlebar tape, cables, goofy grin.

for my person I need new gloves, overshoes and maybe tights.

Am I going to do any better? (am I missing something stupid?) CTW is available in my place again in Jan, which is too late for my purposes and no Irish vendor seems able to offer this kind of price unless I'm missing that too? (if I'm getting into it, I can buy new race wheels and a garmin at that stage ;) )

    thoughts?
