    Hi all,
So what am i gonna do after the DCM!?! Been training away with this as a goal for a long while, i'm looking at getting involved with triathlon training once it's all over...but with the current economic...etc etc, is it dear to get into it? From the bike and all the gear, then wetsuit etc.

Biggest expense is the bike, what sorta money would be recommended for someone who just wants to get started? I've no intentions of being a world beater, i just like the cross training aspect, from what i've seen the bikes are €800+, is that about right? Or is there bikes out there for much cheaper?
And for the swimming, what sort of cost would i be looking at?

Thanks for any response, i'd love to get involved but i'd have to justify the expense if it's gonna be very steep, cheers!

    Hi Pudgey
I did my first event there recently
Borrowed a hybrid bike and borrowed a wetsuit for training and for the race
Have since got what I consider to be a very decent bike second hand from a guy I know who used to be into cycling but not anymore

From what I can make out, the tri season will be over by the time DCM comes around, and won't start again until approx May - maybe some other people might confirm?
Perhaps you should consider taking out pool membership over the winter, keep an eye out for a cheap bike / bike you can borrow over the winter, and see how your getting on come late spring?

Just my thoughts, but it does seem to be a long way off until your first race and maybe you don't need to be in a rush to buy a very expensive bike and/or wetsuit just yet?

Things dont have to cost the earth to dip your toe in. Kinda up to the individual how much to spend at the start - typically the gear people buy in their first season is upgraded pretty quick IF they like the sport.

The early triathlons in April are pool based so its a case of having swimming togs or tri shorts, bike, helmet, t-shirt and a pair of runners. If you've got a hybrid with slick tyres then you can definitely have a go at a sprint triathlon to see if you like it. Sure, there's likely to be people there on bling bikes but there'll be others on hybrids as well. And if theres not it'll be funnier for you as you sail by them ;)

At this time of the year - til around March - some bike shops around the city will have second hand bikes as people trade up their steeds. As long as the frame size suits your build - upgrading the wheels, tyres and saddle is possible without going crazy with the cash. A friend of mine bought an older Giant frame with Shimano Tiagra gear components and upgraded the seat post, wheels and tyres, ALL in for 600 euro. The additional 200 euro might then be used to get a helmet, bike shoes and winter jacket - and then get a christmas present of bibs if you're gonna be training in Jan, Feb and March.

There are a few shops in Dublin selling wetsuits if you do decide to do an Open water swim (wetsuits are compulsary in Ireland since our water temperature is always below the limit) - as per bike - the fit is critical for a wetsuit. Buying online is an option but you run the risk of the suit not fitting appropriately.
