    Hi,
    Im hoping to sit my finals next June for ACCA. And i would like to get into a big/medium practise and do my tax exams.
    I dont have any degree so i rang the commerce department in the Uni, and she explained my options;
    1.Commerce degree, with exemptions i could do it in 1 yr
    2. Do Masters of Business Admin, Fri&Sat for 2 yrs, mature student course
    3. Or just keep applying to firms

    I explained that i was having no luck with firms at all in almost a year, and she said that her students arent either!! And she said it wouldnt be that pleasant going to uni with 17 yr olds.
    Im 26yrs, but im sure there would be plenty of other mature students also.
    Any advice? On how to get into a tax department? Would they accept me without a degree?Did ye find degress well worth it?Any other routes?
    Cheers:)

    Hiya

    never heard of a degree to get into tax.so not much help to you there!
    The only route i ever heard of was accounting with ACA, ACCA etc and then the tax exams.
    was considering of doing the AITI tax exams as well....however unsure if any use in the current market at the moment.

    I understand that a degree hasnt much to do with the tax exams, but because i dont have it i feel it would hold me back in trying to get a position in a good firm to do my tax exams.
    I could be totally wrong, it might not make a bit of difference! Trying to get one of these positions....:confused:

    Do you ned to be a certified accountant to do the tax exams?

    I mean everyone is trying to get into the big 4. So unless you end up with a 1H from a 4 year degree you are going to find it hard. On the other hand you might find it hard to do the tax exams without the financial structuring you will get via an Accounting/Commerce degree.

    if it were me and I knew it was what i wanted to do I would go ahead and do the course and 4 exams for the first term. Once you are qualified apply to small and large firms and eventually you will get something. Tax is such a complex area if you are good at it you will get job. finally if you are going to do it and due to the fact you will be competing against people with 1H in Commerce you better get a top grade.
