Strange words

I couldnt find an appropriate thread for this to go into so:

Where did the term "watershed" come from with regards the censorship of material on the tv prior to a certain time.

Whats the connection between a water shed (which i imagine woud be a shed which holds a water tank) and a time frame in which it is appropriate to broadcast specific material unsuitable to children?

Any other words that dont seem to make sense?

Notwithstanding, Nonetheless, and Pertain; silly words that don't make much sense.

Probably translation of German Wasserscheide : Wasser, water + Scheide, divide, parting

Yup. From the internet that was.

A watershed can be the line dividing the water-basins of two river systems, and I guess was then chosen to represent the dividing line between early programming and later programming.

Bit random, and I don't know when it first came into usage. Never come across a shed for holding water, so couldn't comment on that...

Google whatever term you're wondering about followed by 'etymology;' all shall be revealed.

EDIT: Just tried it with OP's term, the first few hits just seemed to be about the strict meaning/history of the term. Maybe my advice wasn't so good.

i can't think of a use where this doesn't make sense. on a road system it's usually where the roads become more confined and actually resemble the shape of the neck of a bottle.
