    Hi,

I've been trying to upgrade my line from 3mb to 7mb with BT as my speeds seem to be crap at the moment.

Currently BT are moving all their customers over to Vodafone.
I enquired with BT about upgrading my broadband package from 3mb to 7mb.

I was advised that I would need to do this with vodafone and not BT as vodafone would now be handling all upgrades.

I was put through to vodafone and had to give them all my details again even though BT already had all this including bank details.

After a very long time I was put through to a 3rd party verifier. I was advised that I would be required to sign a new 12 month contract. I questioned this and my order was cancelled. I called back vodafone where they continued to insist that I need to sign a 12 month contract. As far as I am concerned I have already served my contract with BT and should not need to sign a new contract.

I am currently waiting on a call back from a vodafone supervisor.

The following is taken from the FAQ section of the vodafone website:

Will I have to sign a new contract with Vodafone?
No, the existing contract will be transferred to Vodafone and the duration left on the contract will remain unchanged.

However this seems not to be the case as vodafone are insisting on a new 12 month contract.

Should I have to sign the 12 month contract or not as it seems I have no choice but to transfer providers and I have already served my contract with BT

If you just be patient and let the transistion happen itself from BT to Vodafone, no new contract will take place.

If you stay on your 3mb service, you won't get forced into a new contract.

But you want to change your service...
If you had upgraded from 3Mb to 7Mb with BT you would have signed up to new 12 month contract. I would have thought so - you get a new, differnt service. Why would VF be different.

I don't understand why you would have to enter into a new contract when you are just changing your tariff. Surely this is of benefit to the carrier as they will be getting more revenue with little or no work. I could understand if I were downgrading.

As it is I may as well switch providers altogether as I am getting no benefit from going to Vodafone. I may as well go to Eircom or UPC or whoever, I just wanted as little hassle as possible.

You just do. I had to when I recently asked UTV to upgrade my service.

OK thanks, in that case I'll just switch providers as there seems to be just as much hassle involved in changing tariffs as in changing providers.

To what end? Can you find the same service cheaper, or cheaper bundled elsewhere?

Yes, UPC and magnet both offer better services for around the same price. The only drawback was I didn't really want to sign a new contract, If I'm going to have to sign a contract anyway I may as well go for one of those.

Doesn't really make sense for BT/Vodafone to be doing this as they are losing a relatively happy customer.

I'd go with UPC tomorrow if I could get it in this ****hole. I'm not from Kerry, but I do need to live here until 2011 at least, and UPC is available in my hometown.

Go with UPC, the majority of people with them are happy. I don't know anyone on Magnet but I'd be tempted by both them and UPC, if I had the choice.

If you're having problems at 3Mbps, then upgrading to 7 may not help, it may actually make things worse. You need to understand what's causing the slow speeds before you do anything.

Yeah I understand that but I can't really get anywhere with BT Technical support.

    Also BT 3Mb = €46.19

    Vodafone 7Mb = €48

Even changing to free calls with BT like I did last year starts a new 12 month contract. Any change involved a new contract. So VF and BT are dead right unfortunately.
Also, if you are a happy customer, then whats wrong with a new 12 month contract, I am a happy customer and no problem entering into a new 12 month contract, no problem.

Well what's wrong is I don't want to commit to staying in that place for another year, after all the original contract was only 6 months.

As I've said before it makes no sense to do this as it is just as easy for me to jump ship now as to stay put.

EDIT: Also during the upgrade process the sales person never said anything about the new 12 month contract until I got to the 3rd party verifer, surely they should tell people about the contract upfront no?

I am a current BT/Vodafone customer. I upgraded from 1mb to 3mb with BT before the switchover and I had to sign for a new 12 months contract. If you stay on your current 3mb package you will not have to sign any new contract with Vodafone but if you change i.e. upgrade from 3mb to 7mb then you have to enter into a new contract.

Think i'll do that, presumably they will put me on the €40 package, which is cheaper than what I'm paying currently anyway....
