    Hi all,

Think I saw a good deal on for a PS3 - 80GB one presume it's the old one not the slim one, for E250 - how does that sound?

Kinda thinking about picking up one later on today!

Anyways just wondering can you play DivX's on them?

    Can they play burned DVD's?

Have they got any USB port? Can you plug in an external HD or a USB memory stick into them to play files from?

Also how are they as a BluRay Player? Would they be comparable to say a standalone BluRay player?

Thanks for all the info guys, greatly appreciated! :)

    Yes it can.

It has two USB 2.0 ports at the front of the console. You can use external HDDs and USB Memory Drives so long as they are formatted with a FAT file system [most drives are]
Also how are they as a BluRay Player? Would they be comparable to say a standalone BluRay player?

The PS3 is a fantastic Blu-Ray player. As it has Wi-Fi access, any online content with Blu-Ray discs work well.

    EDIT: What he said

Also, regarding media playing, look into PS3 Media Server. A useful application for your PC which allows you to stream and transcode any type of media files to your PS3 over your home network.

I think the only difference on your decision should be whether you want to install Linux on the ps3 or not.

I just think the older one looks better.

Oh and on a similar note---Anyone got a decent guide on setting up Mediaserver on the ps3?Im swapping between 3 drives at the minute to play movies.Want to put everything onto a 1 tb drive and leave that connected to the pc and just stream everything from it to the ps3.

    TVersity

And I assume you meant Media Server to setup on PC rather than PS3. There is no media server for PS3.

Just install PS3 Media Server, it should pop up on the PS3 and you can hit play. I have had problems steaming some stuff over wireless but you might be ok.

Can I ask about these media servers? whats the deal with them? I bought a fat 80gb ps3 last week, and i can watch video files and listen to music through my computer without one. The wireless on the ps3 picks it up straight away when the pc is on. The only files it doesnt pick up are mp4 and .mkv. What's the benefits of a media server?

The benefit is it's sole purpose for being. You can steam content to other devices.

For example : A movie or piece of music is on your PC and not on your PS3. However, your PS3 can still play said piece. It's still not residing on your PS3 so taking up no disk space. You have the convenience of not having to copy it to your PS3 [space allowing] in order to view it.

The media file may also not be in a format that the PS3 recognises. The Media stream will transcode [convert] the file [in real time] to a format that the PS3 does recognise. All in memory. The original file is untouched on your PC.

With a media stream you could have 5TB [for example but could be more] of media ready to go. Now, try fit 5TB of hard disk space to your PS3........

You probably have Media Player 11 running. That has an in-built media server functionality that can be used with the PS3. However, PS3 Media Server software [link above] can transcode files on the fly, allowing you to play the above files.

    +1 for ps3mediaserver...http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ .

Takes seconds to download and works straight out of the box .

Also some media servers (like PS3 medai server) can transcode from formats incompatible with the PS3 into formats that are compatible. This allows you to play a much greater range of media.

PS3 media server also plays MKV files for ripped Blu Rays.

Its the complete and utter dogs bollix.

Love it love it love it.

If wireless gives you any jip, use power line adapaters (POE). I have these setup at home and i never have any lag on ripped MKVs for 10gig in size.

    sweet.

I used to use Tversity and i used to praise the hell out of it too, but PS3MS is the nutz and beast Tversity hands down.

Can you get mame running easily on a old PS3, and is there any chance of it on a slim? (even a slim chance -sorry!)

The other difference apart from the 120 vs 80GB HD, is the power usage. This can add up over the years esp. if you never unplug them, I am not sure of all the differences between the 2, I think it is not much in standby but more in usage. I did the maths on 2 dvdplayers before and though one was more expensive it would have paid the difference after 2-3 years in its energy saving on my own typical usage.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware
says the worst was 180W and the slim is 73W, so a good 100W less which is like 10 of those energy saving bulbs, dunno if those are actual measured figures or max.

`Linux on the PS3 has absolutely NO 3D graphics acceleration. Don't know much about Mame but if there is a Linux version, it will probably run... but slowly.

Slow might be good enough, all I wanted was shinobi! which I used to be happy enough running on a P1 75MHz.

I know you can get a megadrive gamepack but arcade shinobi was one of my favorites.
