Hey folks. Absolute newb in all things car-related, so any help gratefully accepted. I've my eye on an 08 Focus, which comes down under the B tax band, for instance: http://www.autotrader.ie/search/Ford/Focus/5DR-1.6-/200922192925019/advert?channel=CARS

We've currently got an aging Fiesta, and have a baby due in Feb next year. There's no mad rush, as such, to get the Focus, and in times when money is tight, it's a close squeak in our budget.

So in my shoes, would you head out to a dealer now - I've seen several advertising this year & model for around €15.5k - or sit tight and see if their price drops much when 10-G license plates hit the streets?

Are you buying straight or are you looking to trade the Fiesta in against the Focus?

Buying straight. Will keep the Fiesta for a spouse-learning-to-drive-mobile.

Anyone else notice the mis-matched hubcaps on that motor? Nothing screams ex. rental more than 3 different wheel trims.

OP - if you can get a good deal now, you might as well take it but I don't think there will be massive discounts available on that sort of stuff in the new year.

Most manufacturers have now sorted out the issues they had with overstocking so are no longer giving additional, large discount. The manufacturers have relaxed sales targets for most marques and are now concentrating on profitability.

I'd wait until January then, a 08 car will be two years old by then.

I wouldn't touch any Merlin ex rentals that's for sure, especially that basic Style model.

Here is a UK 2009 Zetec, 10K on the clock within you budget.

    €12355 + €2666 VRT, landed = €15021!

I know what I would do!

Just from looking on carzone the price differenece a 2007 and a 2008 is about 2k.

I dont know if Focus prices would drop immediately by 2k in Jan.

I reckon you wont see a big change in price until about March next year.

My advice would be to make an offer well under the askin price and go from there.
