I have eircom broadband ( 3mb package ) for the last 3 years now, and for the last 5 months my speeds have been terrible from 5pm to 12am. I rang eircom about 40 times now, had engineer come out to my house , he replaced the telephone point ( waste of time ) also the router was replaced with a new one . Still i was getting these low speeds , the lowest was 300kbps . When i ran a speed test from speedtest.net from the limerick server ( i live just outside limerick ) the pinging rates were high ,182ms! But when i ran speed test from the galway server , they were good , 50ms!
Anyway , most of the eircom technicians told me it probably was the contention ratio that was the problem. So i decided to upgrade to the 7.6mbps package with 24:1 contention ratio but frustratingly that didn't solve my problem , the speeds were still crap , around 1mb to 1.5mb download speed , pinging rates from limerick server were 213ms !
    Can anyone help me ?
I rang eircom back yesterday , and told them it was the same and they said that they have their engineer's monitor it but i think they haven't a clue so hopefully someone here might be able on shine some light, :o.

There are loads of threads about eircom slow speeds at peak times. It's a capacity issue, and there's nothing you can do about it, and nothing eircom will do about it.

Get an alternate provider, that isn't an eircom reseller.

    Hi Splender1

You are having the exact same problem I am experiencing except I live in Longford. I am with U.TV not Eircom.

Come 5-6pm the connection speed will go from 650kbps down to 50-100, the ping/latency of the conenction will rise from 30-40 to 300-500ms for local sites.

I was also upgraded because of the problem from 3mb to 7.6. The contention with U.TV is 12:1 but the problem still remains. It didn't even get slightly better!! I think it is a contention issue but the strange thing is how quickly it degrades, within 30 minutes the connection is crap.

I have escalated this to U.TV and comreg and have an official complaint. I would ask you to do the same. I have been experiencing this issue for well over 7 weeks now and it is consistent and reproduceable. Every evenining/weekend the prob happens.

Phone Eircom. Lodge an official complaint. Contact Comreg. Eircom have 10 days to get back to you with an answer or comreg will intercede. Unfortunately comreg cannot fix things but they can put pressure on Eircom.

For many of us who live outside UPC cabled areas and Magnet/Smart exchanges we only have Eircom or their resellers. If it was a case of being able to jump ship many who have problems would. I for one can't though :(

    Best of luck. :)

Mine has stabilized a bit in Tralee, but if it gets back to where it was last week and for the last few months again, I'll be doing the same.

It amounts to the same thing. Not enough backhaul capacity to any particular exchange can result in slow speeds for end users, regardless of the contention they're supposed to have. I believe eircom's contention ratios are fairly meaningless.

Have you heard of Munster Broadband by the way?
