VST plugins

    Hi there,
I don't know too much about this stuff so I'm just looking for some information. I had a version of cubase sx3 which has recently stopped working. I had tonnes of plugins and vst instruments for it that I got off a friend, like waves studio and the like.

I am now thinking of buying a different cheaper program as I cannot afford the new Cubase. I was thinking of getting Cakewalk Sonar. I am just wondering will all these plugins work on a different sequencer, or are these plugins I have made specifically to work on cubase?

    Thanks

Most programs can host VST plugins, just check the software specs before you buy.

Just checked out the Sonar home studio program specs - it does support VST's so you should be fine - you can see it here http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/HomeStudio/English/features.asp

    Yea, thanks for that.

It seems to support plugins alright. Are they all the same. Would all the plugins from Cubase work of Sonar do you know? They are not specific to a particular sequencer are they? Jut wondering if I would have to use Sonar specific plugins and instruments or if I can use the ones I have.

Thanks again, just don't want to be spending money on something I won't get use out of!

If you aren't 100% convinced about Sonar, try Reaper first. It may be much cheaper if you're using it for non-commercial purposes, and it's quite usable. It handles most of VST plugins pretty well, as well as providing some basic ones on its own. One drawback - no virtual instruments are included, so if you need those, Sonar may be much better.

I take it you're using cracked software, cause i have sx3 and if it stops working i re-install it and check my dongle, hey presto its back.

Reaper is free and the web is full of legit free soft synths, google KVR, its a vst
site that'll give you links to full free synths and fx.

There should no problem moving licenses for use from one program to another. Waves Support will give you any help you need.
