    Guys
I have spotted a good motor but I find now its on a personal plate and it will take 2 weeks to get it transferred.

If I don't have the V5 can I still take the car into Ireland from UK?

Or do I have to wait for 2 weeks and wait for the form, possibly losing the car! :(

Best advice would be to get the car, go to the VRO and let them know the story. I'd say they would give you a covering letter until you get the V5 itself.

Excuse my ignorance but wouldn't a 'personalised' plate still be a UK plate and considered the same as any other UK plate for importation purposes?

Sorry, they want to keep the plate. So it will be transferred to the original.

You can also get a certificate of permanent export which will do for the Irish VRO here, I made a mistake when I imported my car and filled up the new keeper details with my Irish details (and the garage sent it off), the DVLA will then not forward it onto Ireland and had to get the export cert from Swansea instead. You can get an export cert issued at a local DVLA office (UK equivalent of our motor tax office I think) and this will do for importing it to Ireland.

If you apply for a certificate of permanent export from Ireland like I did you could be waiting for up to 6 weeks like I was.

You don't need the V5 to import the car, however a receipt and proof of payment would be handy for the UK transport police and Irish customs.

Info on exporting from the UK including the certificate of permanent export form.

    Read up on this also!

    Hope this helps!
