Heard about it on the Pat Kenny show, I wish them well.

I remember doing the 1,000 K in 1988 and the 1,200 K in 1990 there was not too much traffic on the road in those days.

    I liked the night riding.

Great photos emtroche, especially the one of Fabio Biasiolo striding towards his destiny! See he is prepared for the Irish Summer. Used to race with PJ Nolan many moons ago.

Weather is pretty good. Bit cold at night but dry. Looks like it might stay dry for the week which would be a minor miracle!

Gonna have to keep an eye on their progress on the site. They were in the paper a few weeks ago (North County Leader, I think?)

@Emtroche, if you see the Swords lads, wish them well :)

It's a strange one but in ultra endurance events it's thought women have the potential to be faster than men. :)

Nice story here about Beryl Burton the greatest British cyclist ever !

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beryl_Burton

In 1967, she set a new 12-hour time trial record of 277.25 miles – a mark that surpassed the men’s record of the time by 0.73 miles and was not superseded by a man until 1969.While setting the record she caught and passed Mike McNamara who was on his way to setting the men's record at 276.52 miles and winning that year's men's British Best All-Rounder. She is reputed to have given him a liquorice allsort as she passed him. Apparently, McNamara ate the sweet.

Joe Barr has reached Time Station 4 at Mlin Head. Time of 14hrs 10mins. 16.7mph average.

Fabio is in second place at 15hrs 09 mins.

Good luck to all competing and hope you do well with the weather. Having ridden with Joe leading our group in the Tour of Ireland sportive I would have to hope for him to win, great guy and savage rider. Having held many of the long distance Irish records I hope his local knowledge and indeed acclimatisation to our weather and roads comes through for him.

As a side note the miles are doing my head in, I am having to convert it all back into metric, the system most of this island uses :)

Theres a downloadable schedule on the website with all the distances in miles and kilometres.

    Joe is travelling at 26.9kph

Ok a bit of an update
Team no experience are 27 min on the my clock ahead of An Post Team Connacht (who due to being taken off course by the Gardai at the very start have a 10min allowence) the lead is actually 17 min
Team Swords are just about 50min behind.
They have now gone into the heart of Connemara, where the roads are dead and the climbs although not long(on a normal spin) are going to be a B**T**d after 24 hours. Its also getting cold now.

Saw a few Solo guys this morning and they were suffering
All these Riders deerve respect. If they passing near you check the Timetable and give them a Shout.

I think you get to a point where to an extent it doesn't really matter any more. Although certainly you feel the strain going up a hill!

Just thought I'd bump this as the race has completed.

Joe Barr won the solo with only 4 out of 11 starters completing (!) really emphasises what an effort it is.

All teams completed with Team No Prior Experience taking the win- this team includes Boards Time Trial champion superlav (doing RAAM last year probably helped him there too mind.) Swords CC came fourth.

Well done all to everyone taking part.

What can i say? After travelling the country for the week all i can say is i'm in total awe. I can honestly say that this has been one of the most incredible experiences i've ever had. What these people have achieved is nothing short of phenomenal. Some of the racers who have ridden RAAM, Race Around Slovenia and other races like this have said without a shadow of a doubt this is the hardest cycling event in the world! I'll try and put up a bit of a report and some photos later as the sleep deprivation has me quite cabbaged!

Well done to everybody who not just finished the race but had the balls to enter it in the first place.

My lift to Killarney train station this morning was passed by a few of the guys heading through Glencar Valley on Friday. He said that one guy overtook him as he was driving and the guy (dressed in blue) was on a bike.
Couldnt get over the speed. I explained to this man what they were doing and he couldnt believe me.

I am pretty disappointed in that the passed by my house, but I couldnt get the timetable on the website to open for me, so I missed seeing them.

Anyway, congrats to that bunch of crazies.

Has anyone got a ballpark figure for how long Joe Barr would have slept during this event? or would he have slept at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

There is an article on Cycling Ulster here that mentions the sleep issue:
Not content with merely completing the event however, the former Irish international took the lead as the race travelled north, passing landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway ahead of Fabio Biasiolo of Italy. Barr was also leading the race which was granted World Cup status by the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association for 2009 when he tackled the infamous Gap of Mamore in Donegal.

As the race went westwards however, Biasiolo decided to go without sleep in order to take the lead, a decision which may ultimately have proved his downfall. Biasiolo was in front from Sligo until he retired in the early hours of Saturday morning, after passing Kinsale (Cork). The World ranked number 1 endurance cyclist had just checked in at the fourteenth of eighteen time station’s dotted throughout the country.

Joe definitely would have slept, as to how much I don't know. You could possibly have a rough stab based on his average speed for the whole event of 19.70km/hr vs 31.61 km/hr for the winning team who would have had someone on the road at all times.

    Hi All,

Proper report in a few days. Savage event great fun learnt a lot about myself and the other guys. Started v well actually passed An Post a couple of times on the road and were very near up to Sligo. Then Derek pulled out with an injury so it was all plans out the window with myself and the two other lads now doing much longer stints esp at night.
Mentally was savage but an amazing support crew. My hardest was Clifden To Galway on the bog roads and up some climsb near Oughterard. Lads said I looked drunk gettin off the bike at 5.00 in the morning, I can't remember. About 7 hours sleep in total for me in three and a half days. Maybe 400 miles on bike
Got intoa great battle with the third palce team on the final day as we passed each other ont eh road a few times which reall kept us going. As it got dark on the second last stage we went for it and got into Enniskerry only ten minutes down. But at that stage we were all on empty. 33% more miles on 33% less rest just kicked in and we lost half an hour on the last stage.
Loads learned (bigger crew, use two cars, don't get a rider injured) and definitely would like to give a bash again. Everyone on team and crew has said they want to do again despite the fact we all absolutely trashed ourselves , fell over in van force fed ourselves maybe slept an hour and then got ready for the next stint. As it was a team and we were battling adversity I thnk we went even harder and shows you can give the human body a serious doing over but it can still keep moving. (Blorg think you might have said that)

Will give a more detailed report and more stats on distance when I can get my head together but would highly recommend this event as a mental challenge to you guys.

    Shaun

Well done Shaun, that battle for third place really made the event for my team. Can't recommend this event highly enough to others, the organisers put a huge amount into it. A lot learnt. Enjoy the rest Shaun, ya earned it!

Will this be on again next year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 PeadarCorbally

Don't worry the race will be on again next year. Any feedback anyone has about the event would be more than welcome. Caroline Van Den Bulk the only female soloist and 1 of only 4 finishers in the solo event thought it was tougher than RAAM.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 671 ✭✭✭billy.fish

Has anyone got a ballpark figure for how long Joe Barr would have slept during this event? or would he have slept at all?

When i run the stats i can give an idea on how much/little the AnPost boys slept anyway :)

And allot of other things from the blood, saliva, uring, etc we took!

Just sorting through a load of photos at the moment. Hope to have them uploaded tonight. Sorry for the delay.

Also apologies for any problems people experienced with the website, whether it was trouble downloading the schedule or slow updates. All this stuff is going to be looked at very closely for next year.

So it looks like there is going to be a next year! I have to say, i'm overwhelmed by the response from people who took part and also from the amount of people enquiring about next year! Although i think you're gonna have to give us a couple of weeks to get over this one!
