The "27 Club"

With the sad news of Darren Sutherland passing at the tender age of 27 I couldn’t help but think of the “27 Club” phenomenon. I’m sure most posters are aware of what the “27 club” is, but for those who don’t it’s the group of well known/talented people that tragically died at the age of 27.

Along with Darren (RIP), can posters help to establish whether a significant number of famous people have actually died at this age ? I can only think of a few

    I’ll start with the obvious..

    Kurt Kobain 20/2/67-- 5/4/94
    Jim Morrison 8/12/43 -- 3/7/71
    Jimi Hendrix 27/11/42 - - 18/11/70

Has it any ties to the coincidence club?

I've got a better game, lets play the "guess the next celebrity to die" game.

Your font size in the post suggests you've mindlessly robbed this from another forum OP

Wasn't Janice Joplin in the 27 club too

I'm sorry but, many people die at various ages, some young, some old. I don't think giving special significance to people that died at 27 makes any sense. Janis Joplin and one of the founding members of the Stones died at 27, but apart from them I wouldn't class any of the others as mega-famous.

Because 28 is just to old mannn....

    27 is forever young.

Ummmmm...... Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix.... etc.

There was a movie about it recently. One of S0crates' friends was the main character.

    27?

If you add those two integers and multiply it by the year when Kate Moss was born it becomes 666... oh shi...

Well I was a skeptic till I read this wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_Club

They even have strong statistical evidence* to back up the phoenomon. The list other famous musicians who dies at 27 is breath taking. I always assumed that Helmut Köllen - Bassist with 1970s German prog rock band Triumvirat - died at 28. Not so.

*a chart with no data source

That's only for musicians. Is there a wiki entry for boxers?

Was Jeff Buckley 27 too? I was slightly disappointed yet relieved and shitfaced at the same time when I celebrated my 28th this year.

Aside from the people in the OP + Janis Joplin, i haven't heard of anyone else on that wiki page for the 27 Club. In fact, I had to look up wikipedia to find out who darren sutherland was.

    27 club my hole

100 years old seems to be a safe enough age for famous people not dying:rolleyes:
    Haven't found any yet.

Phil Lynott was 27 too wasnt he? I honestly have to agree with the OP and think it can be a testing period for men - you're supposed to be at your "prime", which accumulates personal pressure on you. So if you self-doubt your abilities in any way on the back of this, negative thoughts accumulate. And because you're not exactly young and naive and neither at the stage of classic "mid-life crisis" territory, I think alot of these insecurities are shoved under the carpet, further compounding the situation.

On the face of it, you could be very outgoing and successful, but absolutely hate yourself on the inside. Wasn't there a similar enough case of one of Brian O'Driscoll's high-flying mates topping himself weeks after announcing his engagement?

I think there are some very real issues at play here. FFS with all due respect, Darren Sutherland went from national hero to hanging himself in a dodgy South London suburb in the space of year. Don't think it's that much of a coincidence. God knows what was going on in the poor guy's head at the time.

    RIP

    tl;td (too long too depressed)

But yeah. 27 eh? Wow. What an age. Huh? Am I right? I'm gonna piggy back on the oul "coinkadinkal death club" on this one. No huge heavenly conspiracy here. Unless Run to da hills has anything to add.............

    :pac:

I dont understand, are we saying that at 27 years old, something happens to many celebraties causing them to take their own life or die of other causes.

Or are we just pointing out a coincident and hardly a monumental one at that.

Do you seriously think I am suggesting any sort of conspiracy or paranormal activity??

What I am saying that people shouldn't just simply write off the suicide of successful young males in this age bracket as being merely coincidental.

Jesus it is these types of attitudes that has made suicide a rising problem during the so-called "good days" of the Celtic Tiger, and I am ashamed to say that it probably won't get any better if attitudes don't improve.

There are coincidences, but we can sure as hell learn from them.

There are only 4 people in the 27 club and that's all there ever will be.

    Brian Jones
    Jimi Hendrix
    Janis Joplin
    Jim Morrison.

Can ye see a Pattern here???? The Letter J and they were all Proper Sex, Drugs, Rock'n'Roll people.

Kurt Cobain does not get in to this club he is just another musicial who died at 27.

Richey Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers disappeared at 27 and is presumed dead.

Full name Richard James Edwards to fit in with the post above :P

Nope, not one bit. What I was suggesting that given the nature of the thread being the 27 club and people dying at that age that it wasn't some big "magical number" conspiracy. I wasn't implying that you were adding to a rumour mill.

Just because you're 27 doesn't increase the depression in a life. I mean there are plenty of people of all ages out there looking down when they should be looking up.

I agree it is a disease, but it's infuriating. You just want to slap them on the back and go "FFS giz a bleedin smile will ya?".

But this 27 club. My last word on it is "coincidence". G'night.

Robert Johnson was 27 (supposedly) when he died after that i cant think of anyone not already mentioned

Edit : Looked it up there Bobby Sands and the Elephant Man too
To be honest i cant see the pattern

Point taken with the rest of your post, but with all due respect mate, that is the last thing you should do when dealing with someone suffering from a mental illness. Imagine yourself in their shoes and how patronising, damging and potentially dangerous such a comment would be for you.

Depression is not that simple. You don't simply "have it and not have it". It requires a huge amount of determination, understanding and pro-active thinking from all relevent parties in order for someone to successfully recover from major depressive episodes.

I think what we can conclude is that people die at every age.

We're finally free from the dreaded "27 Club".

It was a curse while it lasted! all three pages of it!
