Its there for a reason, hook it up to a dianostic computer and see what the fault code is. What engine is it, petrol or deisal?

its petrol and there is nothing wrong as it comes on randomly as it has happened before and the mechanic has done dianostics ans shown nothing

but have fallen out with him as he fecked up one of my other cars

In all seriousness man... get a second opinion. ECU should store fault codes, so unless you disconnect the battery each time the light comes on, hooking it up to diagnostics should at least have some code in it.

If it doesn't have anything, it might be a short in the cable itself, some circuit is earthing through the ECU light somewhere.
