Welfare.ie states that you need the following to apply for rent allowance:

    • Identity documents for you and your dependents, such as, full Birth Certificates, passports, driving license, work permit, immigration (GNIB) card, etc.
    • Documents to show your income and financial situation, such as, pay slips, P45, P35, P60, bank statements, etc.
    • Documents to prove where you live, such as, electricity, gas or phone bills, etc.
    • Documents relating to your tenancy, such as, your rent book, lease or tenancy agreement.
    • The CWO will usually visit you to confirm your circumstances.

How can I provide electricity/gas/phone bills when I am merely renting a room in the house, and therefore those accounts are in the landlord's name?

Regarding the CWO's visit, is it a random visit or do they contact you in advance? If it is random, what happens if you are at college or work when they call?

A letter from the landlord, rent book receipts?

As Elliee said, a letter from your landlord with utility bill in your landlord's name attached. Or receipts from paying your rent. Or a bank statement addressed to you at that address.

    Ah right! Thanks a mill!

I actually thought Elliee wasn't sure herself coz she put a question mark at the end.

    Thanks Elliee and cAr0l!

Can anyone answer my other Q?....i.e....

they usually give you a day they will be around. it could be between 9-3pm so you just have to sit in and wait for them

Can you even apply for rent allowance if you are attending college? As far as I was aware you couldnt?

It depends on how many hours per week the course takes up. For example, if you are in college full time, I don't think you can apply for rent allowance. But if you are in college any number of hours which doesn't affect your availability to also attend a full-time job, then you can apply.
