ATM charges in UK

Went to my bank today (Ulster Bank) and they informed me that while they did not charge for using my Rep. of Ireland ATM card to withdraw money in the UK, some banks in the UK would charge me for using their ATM to withdraw money from my Irish bank account (bit of a long-winded sentence-sorry!).

The woman at my bank did tell me that she personally had found that some British banks wouldn't charge any fee for withdrawals but she couldn't remember which ones. Was hoping someone who had been to the UK recently would know of a bank that won't charge so I can use their ATMs when I'm over there?

    Thanks

You need to upgrade your account and get an ATM card with a Cirrus logo on it if possible. I think they are available for most current accounts(might wanna check with UB about that though).

Cards that have the Cirrus logo do not get charged for ATM usage within the Eurozone.

Generally speaking, the bank ATMs don't charge, it is the privately owned ones, like Cash Machine. Pretty similar to Ireland.

However, if you are with Ulster Bank, then look for either Royal Bank of Scotland or Natwest ATMs, they are all part of the same group and don't charge.

If you use Barclays, HSBC or one of the others, the charge is about £1.00 so it isn't going to kill you, you could quite easily gain or lose that amount in interest rate changes.

By the way, if your card is a laser card with the Maestro logo on it, you can use it pretty much anywhere in the UK.

Yeah it is a laser card with the Maestro logo- do you mean that I can use it as a laser card or just as an ATM card? Thanks
