taxing someone else's car

Lads and ladies apologies for the basic nature of the question, but I have temporarily borrowed a car from a mate who is out of the country and left their car behind them. It hasn't been taxed for the last 12 months, my question is how do I go about taxing it (want to be legit with it) if I'm not the registered owner of the car? I've already transferred insurance over from my own car which is having maintenance done.

I know there's likely a simple solution so sorry for having to ask...

You'll prob have to do it in the tax office. You'll need to pay arrears or declare the car off the road for the last 12 months.

You can also do it by post, but I wouldn't be driving without tax, and wouldn't want to wait, so I'd go to tax office.

Your best bet is to get the car signed off the road, don't tell the Garda signing the form your not the owner as it may casue some hassle and they never ask. Then bring your insurance and NCT if it has one, thought they never ask for this, to your local tax office and pay you money. Note that if you don't get the car fixed till later this month it will be cheaper not to get the forms signed till next month as you pay for the month you tax it.
