Very general guideline is 500-700 miles, but it depends on the shoe, and the runner. At around 450 miles, I relegate mine to 2nd pair responsibilities, i.e. recovery/grass/easy runs, and keep my newer pair for hard runs/races etc. In that way, I get 500-600 miles and always have a good pair for hard runs.

I tend to get niggles in my knees and ankles once the shoes are too old. That's how I know to replace them.

This used to happen around the 400 mile mark when I was new to running, and is now between 500 and 600 miles usually.

I used to get niggles in the knees and hips at about 450 miles and then I knew it was time to change. The latest shoes I'm using are wearing out at between 350-400 miles so a look at the outsole will help you make up your mind as well.

The big problem can be training in a pair of shoes for 500 miles and then realising that the race/marathon will have to be run in a new pair not yet broken in or in the old ones that will end up causing pain over the course of the race.

not sure how many miles I do in them at all, but I know the feeling when they need to be changed, my last pair I ran a bit too much and could feel it in the legs, so will have 2 pairs in future.

I used to get 500 out of my brooks adrenaline but with my last pair of Surge+ I got 700 miles and no injuries. When my shoes retire from running life they get relegated to indoor football.

and just to remind people about Mick Rice and Hard worker's connections with Lezan and exporting the shoes to young runners in Africa. Shoes that are too old for you, might have a second life elsewhere.

I gave them a few pairs of shoes just before the Ballycotton 10 this year. Although the ones I'm using at the moment have such massive heel wear I don't want to be responsible for crippling some poor fella! Gardening looks to be the way to go.

I toss mine after 300 miles. I'm heavier (14st7lbs) so they break down faster.

Noticed alot of people dont change there runners until they are injured or feel pain. After 300-400 depending on weight of runner,go into a store and try the same shoe on and you should feel the difference. when things get sore your about 100 miles to late or your in the wrong shoes.

Mine usually last about 300-350 miles. I'm a fatass and heavy overpronator, basically a recipe for making shoes go to hell.

Good point HM. How can we go about donating our old shoes? I have a pair that I'd be happy to donate.
