    Hi all,

can you give me some advice on this bike - i know its very well recommended on here but a couple of quick questions:-
    1. is this bike a compact and what is the difference between a compact and a standard (is it horizontal bar)
    2. Im 5'7" with an inseam of 30" would you recommend a 52 or 54cm frame - the sizing charts quote both, would there be much difference between the 2 (i spose id feel bigger with a 54???)
    Thanks
    tony

Semi-compact, i.e. slightly sloping toptube. Gives you slightly more standover clearance than traditional.

I'd probably go for the 52, as indicated by the horizontal top tube length this (which works for me).

Generally the advice is to go smaller if you're between sizes, but bike fit is very personal.

Smaller frame means faster handling but lower handlebar height, which can cause issues if you have flexibility problems. You can correct for frame size with stem length, and correct handlebar height by flipping the stem.

Ideally find someone with one of the two sizes who can let you ride around on it.

nope not a compact basically old fashioned pretty level top tube top tube length is probably more critical
when i bought it had pretty much the same sizing as my steel framed road bike so no suprises there for me.
you could always email wiggle with your height and inside leg to bike@wiggle.co.uk and see what they think
difference in top tube for 52 537 to 54 543 not much but depends how stretched out you like to be i actually feel more upright on mine to my old bike.

    Thanks guys,

have emailed wiggle and posted a question on their web site so hopefully they'll get back soon - i guess the safest bet is always to get the smaller but ive also asked them if i can exchange if its not suitable

hopefully ill be on the road soon - some good bargains to be had out there at the minute, i know its this / last years stock but so what...

Any shops stock this bike in dublin so I can avail of the BTW scheme and still get it.

Otherwise i'll just go with my original choice and take a lapierre r-lite 500

Hope you're getting a good price for it. CSS list it as €1445, which is not good value IMO, given that you can get a Boardman Team for €1000 or a Team Carbon for €1250.

It's only available through wiggle, but you can still get it on the Cycle to Work scheme if your employers is amenable - the bike doesn't have to be bought in Ireland.

I'm a bit surprised by this but sure if wiggle will take it back if it doesnt suit sure i think i'll give this one a go - Email from wiggle team below
must say theyre fairly quick getting back (< 1 hour) - will let ye all know how i get on
    thanks

    Hello

    Thank you for your email.

I would suggest for the measurements you have supplied that the 54cm frame would be best suited. Should this turn out to be ill fitting it can of course be exchanged.

    Regards

    Peter

Hi 1tony, I am same height 5' 7" and got a 52 frame. Changed the stem from 90mm to 110 and fit is perfect(for me!)

The sizing (as with the vast majority of compact frames, excepting Giant) is "virtual" seat tube length, e.g. what the seat tube length would be if it extended up to meet a horizontal top tube.

So if you know what works for you with a traditional geometry that will probably be the SAME size on the Cayo.

I rode a 58cm Trek 5000 (traditional level top tube) before getting the Cayo and went for a 58cm Cayo. Have other compact geometry bikes, also in "58cm" and the measurement is the same. As I say Giant is the exception where I am a "L (55.5cm)" - and my MTB but that is a whole other area.

Note you can't compare actual top tube lengths between compact and standard either- need to compare virtual lengths.

    Sy -
what is your inseam, now see i had decided to go with th 54 and exchange if necessary, think i still will - if its an awful fit it will be obvious and sure i dont mind exchanging

Im guessing my perfect fit would be 53cm but surely there would be little diff with either 52 / 54 if this is the case

See I cant get any of these bikes I want to use my tax free €1000 and unfortunately Im part of the public sector so Im stuck with going to bike shops approved by the scheme, which is turning into a nightmare everytime I come on this site and see the bikes I could have won if only i wasnt stuck with getting one in an irish store.

Im off to cry about buying an expensive bike which isnt really worth the money :(

Generally if you are between sizes either one will probably do and you can adjust the stem to compensate. Wiggle's sizing advice is generally pretty good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭tomc

Unfortunately Wiggle wont customise the bike for you, ie replace the stem or bar width, you'll have to do that yourself when you receive stock size.
    Still you wont be sorry.

Stems are pretty cheap. Wiggle changed the stem and crankset free on my Litespeed for different sizes but possibly they wouldn't do it on the Focus. They wouldn't change the bar width or the cassette. On the one hand no harm asking- on the other though you don't know what you want yet so probably best just try it out as it comes.

    Guys,
Thanks for all the help n guidance this last couple of months - i been asking a few (well ok a lot) questions about every make and model under the sun and had great advice from all but esp lumen n blorg - thanks
finally ordered the Cayo this afternoon, this really is the bike i wanted but couldnt justify the 1300, its reduced at present to 1050 (and a bit less if delivering to north) so will cost me about the 500 after the B2W allowance
Only thing is the marathons on in a cpuple of weeks so it will be a while before i get a really good spin on it, thanks again and i'll let you know what its like and maybe see you at the races or tris next year

    Tony
