My first sika stag

Happened to stumble across this lad yesterday. This is my second season on this shoot and things are starting to come together...The first season was more of a recon as 17000 acres is a lot of woodland to work out.But still managed a good few does and a hand full of spikers.

I spotted this lad on a steep wooded hill. He was about 120 out when I spotted his white rump.Couldnt make out the head at this stage as he was grazing or scrathing facing directly away from me..

I fumbled for my bins to get a better look and what a beaut he was..

Now the heart is going 180+(Im sure all you all know the feeling)As I try to sort out my sticks on a 35 Degree slope...not happening so they were quickly and quietly put aside...

I steadied myself against the nearest tree, took aim but all I had to shoot at was his white ass....After waiting for what seemed like forever He lifted his head and pointed his nose to the sky(he must of caught wind of something)
Then I let fly with the trusty 7mm08 and hit him fair in the back of the neck....Game over

The reason Im typing this up at the wee hours(2:24 am) is cause my body is in bits,Black and blue from the drag back to the car. But thats another story that I`ll keep to myself:o:o

And one more thing...I went to the chipper on the way home dressed like I am in the pic:D:D

I`ll do a european mount on the head...The fun fund is too low for a taxidermy job on it...Would look sweet though.

Thats a fine stag dwight, comghairdeachas!

I was out yesterday morning on some new property myself and i came across three fine fallow bucks around 6am, they were the biggest ive seen so far as im new enough to stalking as far as im concerned, i got into around 70 yards when i raised the rifle for the shot, when i saw the size of the three of them more clearly through the scope i finally realised how terrible buck fever actually is, i couldnt for the life of me hold a steady aim i was so excited,i must have had three minutes to take an easy shot at either one but no.. they didnt stay around long anyway id say they got my scent so il try compose myself in some calm manner in the morning when i go out again, hopefully il have a picture to post up too!

Well done dwighet, nice animal. They are very fat and heavy this time of year. I dragged my six pointer up hill back to the car on Saturday. One always seems to get the heavy ones when one goes alone.
What rifle do you have there? great caliber.

Its a nice looking stag alright but he dosent look very content in the photo. If you look at some of the photos in magazines etc,the Deer always have a very content look about them.

Hehe, seen you shoot it alright, looks thumpy. Points like a finger though from when I had a look at it. Hope it serves you well for a long time. Really looking forward to collecting the new Sako now. Pictures are making me jealous.

Mate it is a buzz...Especially in the winter with the frost and the snow..waiting for the fog to rise first thing in the morning.Every step you take sounds like walking on corn flakes..It makes the 2hr drive well worth while.Getting an animal is just a bonus...Being amounst them in there enviroment is the real joy...

The first snaps of cold in the nights have made me edgy already, been getting out and about after rabbits. Love the hunt. Can't wait to start after the deer on my own. Getting out with friends until the rifle arrives.

Very good choice, can't beat quality. I also have a Lothar barrel on my 308 sako which shoots very well and soon I'll have a light carbon stock on my remmy.
Light and accurate is the way to go.

    Dwight,

I was going to PM you this fellas details. I have met him and the feedback from others is very positive.

Only thing is, which might be good if the fun fund is low, is that he is up the walls so you may be waiting a few months.

It would be a shame to do a European on that head imo.

When I get my first Stag I will be going to him as he is very reasonable in price also.

Nice stag Dwight. I wish I didn't discard my first decent stag head, was better than anything I've had since.

I posted last year looking for info on DIY mounts. Results not quite professional but nicely presentable. If you're going to do it yourself, I recommend using a gas burner in the garage for boiling out.
