First year IRC channel

Decided to start an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel for the firsties so we can get to know each other. It's at #dcufreshers on Quakenet for those of you who know what that means.

For those that don't, there's a web-based chat program here. You can go there, enter your nickname (Your boards one would make it easy for us to know who we're talking to) and enter "#dcufreshers" for the channel.
Assuming nothing goes wrong you'll connect and can chat with us.

For now I guess that's it, I suppose I could update this with links to non-web-based chat programs or whatever, but this should be all you need to just join and chat.

EDIT: 11 people here so far, it's registered with Quakenet with me and Challengemaster having control, so seems to be worthwhile, just keep coming back to make sure it stays this good :P

I find it interesting that you've started an IRC channel on quakenet, when DCU has a networking society running an irc service peered with the intersocs network.

But I guess you guys can't access that yet.

    nope, not yet :P

Also for people joining, a lot of the times there might not be much/any chat going on.
If there's no-one talking say hello and leave the channel open in the background or something while you browse boards or look at porn or whatever you do online.
If you're lucky people might start to be social.

Yea, RedBrick had a very active #CA1 this year so us oldies can head off to #CA2 and you can take it over when college starts back. Or you can make your own channels as well. Oh, btw, we'll be electing a first year rep in the first few weeks if any of you are interested in being on the committee.

Not very much to be honest. Just kind of relay what kinds of things people in your year would like to see from the soc, attend our weekly committee meetings and give opinions on stuff. It also means you'll be in with more of a chance to go to the Clubs and Socs Ball. It's a formal ball and tickets are distributed to societies before they go on free sale and you'd have a better chance of being nominated for the "Best Fresher" award at the Clubs and Socs Awards. This means you get a free dinner and a ticket to the awards.

I might be interested in being a rep!

Is it for your course or for the whole of first year?

It would be for first year until about Aprilish. That's when we hold our AGM and you can run for another position if you like. We have one first year rep position so it would cover all the first years in the college.

    Oh wow!

Sounds tough! But could be interesting

    When are you choosing?

It's not really tough. It's mainly to get a first year's perspective on the society. We'll be holding elections after clubs and socs days. Anyone can nominate themselves. The only criteria for this position are that you're a first year and you've joined the soc on clubs and socs days.

    A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES.

Meetings will be at a date and time that suit the majority of committee members.

    I wouldn't mind being a rep.

    No.

Lots of clubs/societies will have different positions based on what their needs are.

As for this 1st year IRC channel, dont forget to invite everyone to the annual first year /disco

Most clients don't even have a /disco do they? I doubt the webchat does at least, which is what most of them are using.
