Audi A3 problem (hunting)

Hey all,

My girlfriends Audi A3 (1.6 8v, 2001) is hunting most of the time when she starts the car or leaves it idle.
(Hunting.. this is a word I learned today :pac:, basically it's revving constantly when idle).

I've been told it could be the oxygen sensor so this will be worth replacing.
Any ideas how much getting and fitting one will cost?
I've had a look online and could see them for about the $40 mark from American sites. Any good Irish sites/places to order from?

The car has been 'serviced' a few times since it started happening but they did nothing about it.
All the regular things have been checked/replaced, spark plugs, air filter and the like.

Is it likely to be that or could it be just as easily something else?

Could be an air leak in the air intake although I do remember a thread on here about petrol A3 before saying that there was a common problem in them causing this. Cant remember what it was though

I'd say your best bet is to get the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer using VAG-COM so that any ECU error codes can be analyzed.

Otherwise you will only end up spending money on parts based on guess work or pure speculation.

Erratic idle is usually a vacuum leak or a dirty MAF sensor. Listen for a 'hiss' sound under hood at the hoses after the car has warmed up for a few minutes for any leaks.

My car is exactly the same and i've started a thread about this already here. I have done everything. Even replaced loads of sensors, changed throttle, checked valves etc etc.

I am fed up at this stage that i am just going to learn to live with it. It only revs in 1st or 2nd gear so if you tell your girlfriend to try and stop in 3rd gear, it shouldn't be as bad.

There is one last thing i am going to try here

If that doesn't work, i'll learn to live with it. it's a shame because it's a lovely car to drive except in low gear

More likely to be the MAF sensor then the lambda senor.
