Chennai - resort hotels ?

We're likely to be heading off to Chennai in April for a friends wedding and are having a quick look on the accommodation front.

We were in China with the kids (then 7 & 5) two years ago and learned the hard way that it pays to go down the luxury route when everyone is tired and exhausted after another day visiting places, so this time we're determined to do it better by (a) not visiting as much and (b) making sure we get the best hotels available.

At the moment, it doesn't look like there is a great range of hotels with direct beach access in the immediate area. Beach access isn't a must, but it would be handy. Or . . . is the beach any good in the first place ?

Can anyone recommend a good/great hotel in Chennai from a family perspective ? I won't say money is no object, but certainly if it comes to a choce between spending a few extra €s or staying in a crummy hotel I'll gladly spend the money.

I think some people recommend staying in Bangalore which is relatively nearby in Indian terms (5h-7h drive), but I think we would prefer Chennai if possible. Just in case, has anyone got recommendations for a stand-out hotel in Bangalore ?

    Cheers,

    z

p.s. I will be getting some books in the next day and checking with the hosts as to what they recommend, but I thought I would check out the boards view as a first step.
