iMac 400 problem

    Hi all,

At the weekend, I used Disk Utility on my current iMac via Target Disk Mode to perform a 7 pass erase on my beloved Lime iMac 400. It's in preparation for new lease of life, at a primary school. The problem is that when I put the 10.4 install disc in and attempt to start up from there, to re-install, all that happens is after a minute or so after start up, a folder icon appears in the middle of the screen, with an alternating Mac face and a question mark.

The problem may lie with the USB hubs, which appear to work intermittently on a one on, one off basis. Before transferring files, I had to switch the keyboard from one slot to the other, despite both working previously, before switching, if you see what I mean. If it didn't work in one, I'd put it in the other, and it would be fine. Now I'm wondering has something more terminal happened in the procedure, and thus, I cannot start up from the CD, because holding down C on startup is not being seen if the USB hub is not recognising the keyboard.

Is there any way I can install 10.4 on my iMac via Target Disk Mode or any other option?

    Thank you

Silly Question to get things rolling :) Are you sure the iMac has a DVD drive ? I think Tiger (10.4) came on DVD ! Might be wrong of course :)

Yeah, it has a DVD drive. When it's on, I put the Tiger DVD in, then turn it off. When I try to start from the disc, it doesn't do anything, and the folder icon appears with the question mark. The disc then ejects itself.

Yes, you can install 10.4 via target disk mode.

Start-up your iMac in target disk mode and connect it to your other computer.
Insert your 10.4 dvd into your other machine and click install.
After the machine restarts, your iMac's drive will show up on a list of drives to install the OS onto.
Select your iMac's drive and click install.

sounds like the dvd may be banjaxed on imac. but Target mode away if you have another PPC mac that is.
