    Hi all,

Just got this missed call this evening to my brand spanking new phone number (unlisted). Turns out that the call has come from a "survey" company that refuse to give details about the company name etc and apparently then try to sell you items after the survey. Info here

I am really concerned as to how my home phone number got in their hands. As I said we are unlisted so can only assume they got hold of my phone number by questionable means.

Any ideas on how this could have happened, and most importantly to find out what to do about it? Oh, and this number is UK based and doesnt accept incoming calls (constantly engaged).

    Cheers

Its possible they used a random number generator, but I suspect thats unlikely.

Have you specificly had your number marked "No direct marketing calls allowed." - look at the little orange symbol here: http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/search/Dublin/murphy.html

Also check if you are listed there.

    Hi Victor,

I'm not on that list having checked my location and surname.

Just got a call back from these guys, and I was ready for them.

The company is called GSKNOP and are conducting research on behalf of the UK government about the economy etc. and would take 5-7 mins.

I asked how he got my number and this is how:

they take names and numbers out of the phone book, then use a random number generator to change the last digits of the number.

So being unlisted doesnt even protect you... What can be done about this?

Talk to comreg. They have a form on their website... http://www.askcomreg.ie/about_us/form.asp

If you send them what you have above, it should be enough for them to look into it and determine if there's anything they can do.

although since it's a UK company, this page is probably more useful: http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/privacy_and_electronic_communications.aspx
