Retail jobs?

Is it easy to get a job in retail, do any places take on people with no experience? Like Dunnes Stores or anything?

I applied online for a job at Jack&Jones a week ago, in their ad it said 'no experience necessary as training is provided', they sent me an email saying they would 'get back to me in the near future', although it didn't sound definite, I still havn't heard anything from them. Has anybody else dealt with them before? And how long exactly is the near future?

Was it an actual job advertised or was it online on their website.

From experience when I would have hired, I usually needed ASAP, due to person leaving, increase in sales etc.

Not a lot of places are hiring at the moment also as other sectors are suffering, people with different experience and qualifications are applying for position they probably wouldn't have a while ago.

If you really want to work in retail, first ask in places you shop most often, it will show you have an interest int he stock, failing that ask the manager you speak to if they know of any other retail jobs available as most managers are in constant contact with each other.

    Good luck.

I wouldn't be waiting around for J&J to get back to you... They may call, but they may not. For retail, especially nowadays, your best bet is to i. keep an eye out for vacancies, ii. give CV's into as many shops as possible, iii. make yourself stand out by talking to the manager if possible.

I'd say shops are recieving hundreds of CV's per week to be honest, so you may have to be a bit more creative with your job seeking than in previous years. Not sure what form that may take, but in reality it's going to be hard to find part-time work for another few months anyway. Everyone's in the same boat.

Certainly apply to Dunnes, Tesco, Superquinn, McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Harry Ramsdens, etc etc etc.

Was it an automated e-mail? If it was and they have no jobs open then the near future could be very far away...

If I was looking for a retail job I'd be walking into the store, I wouldn't apply over the internet.

If for example all their summer staff leave to go back to school the manager needs staff fast. And they'll choose the person they met two days ago over the person who emailed head office three months ago.

Actually, now is not a bad time to go searching for a retail job (well not so good but it is back to school time so the part-timers leave)

    Hi Op

If you go to http://www.fas.ie they are advertising a number of retail jobs in various superquinns around Dublin. There is also a couple of job adverts for some retail shops in Co. Kildare. Fas.ie is probably the best site at the moment for retail jobs. Good luck and hope you find a job soon.

Dunnes will take people with no experience. In big department stores and supermarkets, managers on the floor are not the ones hiring you. Customer service take in CV's and they're sent down to personnel who are the ones who'll interview you and hire you. Your best bet is to pleasantly hand in your CV to the desk and state part-time or flexi to them. Plenty of people are wrecking manager's heads and pleading with the desk staff that they 'really need this job!!!!!' and stuff. The more headstrong method, I wouldn't recommend it in big stores tbh.

I have recently been let go from my retail job. I regret being let go as I have no money now at all, but at the same time I am glad to get out of retail. It can be very stressful at times depending in what area of retail you are in.

It was advertised on jobs.ie, under the company name J &J Retail Ltd., but I got an automated email from a company called O'Connors Jeans.

    Probably "overqualified", whatever that means.

They want a young person who is happy with minimum wage and not something with experience and ideas who may challenge their manager

Thank you, so if I went in to Dunnes I just hand in a CV to customer service? Would it not be better to go to Head Office though?

Thanks for the link. Had a quick look through it. It's a bit late now. Worked in a store as a manager and didn't have anytime to get out for my breaks as there was nobody to cover me, couldn't even sit down for five minutes. I worked 9 hours straight often.....its no way to be.
