iMac problem

    Today while downloading some software updates for my computer, I lost my internet connection. I got a message saying there was an error while downloading a security update. I restarted the computer but when it opened up the dock and trash were missing from the bottom of the screen. Another problem is that I cannot physically move icons on my desktop. Some programmes wont open saying there is a library conflict. I also cannot shut down or restart the computer down from the desktop. Is there anyway of fixing this without reinstalling the original startup disk. Any help would be much appreciated, as I cannot see to find the original disk.
