USB Ports lost power

I have an Acer 5720G. I have lost power on the 4 USB ports. All work okay if I use a powered hub so it looks like its just a power issue. How can I get them working properly again?

    Some pointers:

    Check your bios settings.

    Check your device manager settings.

Check your power management software settings.

    Thanks Ollie.

Check your USB devices in the Device manager. In their properties page it should talk about Power Management - fiddle with those.

I have carried out all of the suggested checks - nothing odd in Device Manager, I dont have power saving enabled (i rarely use battery). I have fiddled about with power management.
I have tried several different usb devices incl pen drives, camera, external HD - all work if connected to powered hub but none when connected directly.
The fact that everything works if it has power seems to suggest that the ports are not getting any power,
