God, I hate those cyclists. Every last herbal tea-drinking, Harriet Harman-voting one of them.... Knowing they wouldn't hear me coming, I stepped on the gas, waited until the split second before I overtook them, then gave them an almighty blast on the horn at the exact same time I passed them at speed.
The look of sheer terror as they tottered into the hedge was the best thing I've ever seen in my rear-view mirror.

    What. A. D!ck.

I spat out my herbal tea when i read it. I also bet a cyclist has never rapped on his window to make a holier than thou comment. I don't know any cyclist who would be so stupid.

Unfortunately there are sufficient idiots like him for the EU to mandate that all pure electric cars have a noise maker attached so people can hear them coming. His fun, assuming he wasn't just being silly, will be short lived :)

Following on from Wiggins, Robbie McEwan has appealed on Twitter for hackers to "fúck up" Martin's website and well, it seems to be down...
website of cyclist hater James Martin. Anyone with computer skills feel free to **** it up! otherwise, leave him nasty messages in geust ...

I think he's got hate mail now and due to the efforts of Twiggo and McEwan there'll probably be some form of apology coming. Cyclists 1 Idiots 0

I sent a message to FEEDBACK at the Mail Online saying his article was "not amusing" and his driving "dangerous".

I'm doing my bit to speed his retirement.

The only thing more sad than being Jeremy Clarkson is wanting to be Jeremy Clarkson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

I watched the documentary where he entered the Mille Miglia and he came across as a complete tool. Suddenly he thinks he is Jeremy Clarkson and decides to start imitating his journalistic style. I don't mind when Clarkson has a rant, at least he can write. Stick to chopping carrots please James.

I'd say any feed-back (positive or negative) sent to the Daily Mail would only encourage them to produce more of this kind of rubbish. They thrive on being prejudiced - the more gratuitous, irrational, and unsubstantiated the prejudice, the better.

Well I've met some serious assholes on bikes who seem to think that they have right of way over me when I'm on a roundabout...I even had one dickhead pull out in front me causing me to swerve around me...needless to say the little fcuk didn't do it again..
I've nothing against cyclists (i'm one myself) but if some dickhead was rapping on my window giving out about my car and my carbon footprint (which is 3 times lower than the Irish average) I'd personally do the same...just for the laugh mind you :D
When I'm cycling I don't go around rapping on car windows/leaning on their bonnets etc and I'd expect the same courtesy back from cyclists when I'm in the car.
But it's a sad fact basically that they are assholes everywhere be it on foot/car/bike etc..

Yeah, because dangerous driving is so much less dangerous if it's funny...

Courtesy, as you say, works both ways.

Thanks for sharing. Of course, without all the facts we don't know what happened, e.g. speeding (must have been going some ould whack to swerve on a roundabout). I wonder why he didn't do it again.

The difference is, you don't write a column for a big (large, not good) newspaper making a joke out of dangerous driving.

    .

Nah...i was only doing 20 mph on the roundabout..he decided that he couldn't be bothered stopping where he was supposed to and cycled in front of me...hence I had to swerve around him..then he stopped in the middle of the roundabout shaking his fist and cursing at me

Well, see I'm not excusing anyones behavior here. Bad cycling or bad driving are two sides of the same coin, but the reason that James Martin has caused such outrage with cyclists is because he wrote an article publicising his dangerous driving and pretty much relishing his recklesness. Now, if the cyclist had happened to be Ray Darcy and went on the radio the following morning, laughing at how he rode carefree into a roundabout and nearly caused a crash, I would be equally outraged.

Frankly, I hope Martin receives plenty of grief over this. In fact, if I was one of those cyclists and I remember some fat fool in a very rare electric roadster driving dangerously, then happen to read this article, I would report him for dangerous driving.

The problem is, that the asshole in the car is in a two tonne lethal weapon. A guy wrapping on a door or car window about something, although annoying, will hardly kill anyone. (I know some cyclists riding on the road could cause an accident, but that is not what we are talking about here)

Traffic offense punishment should be linked to the girth of your vehicle?

@Berkut- I am presuming this cyclist was entering the roundabout and you were already on it proceeding around past his junction? If so, bad cyclist.

There is a bit of a problem though generalising from your experience of one bad cyclist whether on a roundabout or rapping on your window to thinking that it is now OK to go around deliberately injuring other cyclists with your car (having come off into a few hedges in my time I can assure you there are injuries.)

This sort of attitude towards an identifiable group is of course the root of racism, anti-Semitism, etc... but it is somehow considered acceptable to foster this "us" and "them" mentality on the roads and laugh about directing violence at bloody cyclists.

Mentally replace "cyclist" in any of these rants with "black person", "Jew", etc. and consider how acceptable such an article now is... I guess the Mail can't advocate violence against these groups any more so the cyclists get it instead.

Jesus, get to the point people. F'ing podcasters. Skip the first 6 minutes. Actually, the whole thing is a bit will-destroying.

James Martin isn't even right about the car - the Tesla isn't particularly fast (0-100mph in over 12 seconds compared to sub 9s for the old entry-level F430), so it can't really "go head-to-head with any Ferrari" in any meaningful way. At least Clarkson writes well and is somewhat knowledgable about cars.

Martin doesn't have a clue about cars. I watched him buy that beautiful Maserati to race in the Mille Miglia and his attitude, knowledge and manners were f'cking cringeworthy. He was a knob from start to finish.

But whenever I drive to London, dutifully paying my £8 for the privilege (on top of my road tax, petrol tax, parking and all the other rip-offs)

This argument gets me everytime, do morons like him think that no cyclist owns a car or something ? We pay car tax on two cars at home which probably gives me twice the right to be on the road than alot of these narrow minded morons.

James Martin has made a public apology for comments he made against cyclists in an article in the Mail on Sunday.

He's obviously been consulting his PR bunny and decided to back down for appearances sake. What a loser.

I would have had more respect for him if he'd stuck to his guns. We should get Gordon Ramsay and TimAllen to hunt him down and insert a new spine, medieval style.

Thank you very much for your email about last week's James Martin column.
I would like to assure you that it was not James Martin's intention to offend any cyclist, or to condone any form of reckless driving.
This article was intended to be humorous, but was clearly misjudged and both he and I, on behalf of The Mail on Sunday, apologise for any offence we may have caused you.

    Yours sincerely,

    Maybe he thinks he's Clarkson?

I hate those "for any offence" weasel apologies. He is a oafish, boorish dick isn't he...

I content myself with the idea that he'll probably be buying wing mirrors much more often than your average motorist if he spends a lot of time driving in urban areas.
