2nd best hurling team of the decade

I'd plump for the Deise. Even though they have no All Ireland to show for it, they were consistently the toughest Munster team to beat over the 2000's.

Count up the All-Ireland wins and it has to be Cork. Waterford have been great too and deserved an All-Ireland. Surprised that you should speak of Waterford as being the Munster team most difficult to beat. Have you forgotten Kilkenny's defeats at the hands of Cork in the All-Ireland Finals (in addition to the one Cork threw away)?
For the past decade, Waterford would fit in 3rd place, followed by Tipperary, Clare, Galway and of course there's Limerick.

The Cork team of 2003-2006 I think, 4 all ireland finals in a row, winning 2 and losing 2.

A pointless question. The answer is obvious. Cork.

It will be far more interesting to see who it will be in ten years time. Perhaps Kilkenny?

Nonsense. How you can think the Waterford team with 0 All Irelands was better then A very good Cork team with 2 all-irelands is beyond me.

ya bit of a no brainer really has to be cork,4 finals in a row do we really need this

often giving kilkenny their hardest game and only team to beat them(by 8pts) in the decade in a final, winning against galway(by 5pts) to follow it up,

sandwiched between 2 (3pt) losses to the cats

Yup, Cork are certain 2nd's, with ourselves a fair bit behind them.

In fairness, the Cork team of 04-06 was an absolutely fantastic panel of players, a real never-say-die attitude about them and they were never overly physical in their style of play either.

If you were to base it solely on individual seasons, the Kilkenny team of 08 would be first, then Cork of 2005 and followed by Waterford in 2007.

    Gotta be Cork.

In terms of drama and entertainment it has to be Waterford.

Waterford couldn't even get to an All-Ireland final in 2007, how could they possibly rank 3rd on such a list ahead of Tipp 2001 or Kilkenny 2002? Beats me anyway

Who cares? Nobody remembers who finished second.

You could say that Waterford were the biggest underachievers of the decade. Never really reached their potential on the big day, they had always a great win or 2 per season and ended up believing that it was their year before losing in the All Ireland Semi final.
Of course they won 3 Munsters so not a complete waste of talent. But...

    KK subs without a doubt.

If you look at the entire decade the trophies are broken down like this (I am not including the Ulster championship)
    Team AI	Prov	League	Total
    Kilkenny	7	9	5	21
    Cork 2	4	0	6
    Tipperary	1	3	2	6
    Waterford	0	3	1	4
    Galway 0	0	2	2
    Wexford 0	1	0	1

Kilkenny are streets ahead of anybody else. In the entire decade only 3 teams have beaten them in the championship if I remember correctly, Cork once, Galway twice and Wexford once.

I think it is worth remembering the last time that they lost a provincial championship game

Very good table Cruiser. Have you anything like that for football?

Was mostly from memory, don't have time to do one for football right now.

You should probably assign some sort of weighting

    i.e AI - 7
    Munster 4
    League 3
    Leinster 2

Kilkenny would still come out on top though...

    KK subs without a doubt.

I've never agreed with this and I still don't, in fact I doubt this team would make the 1/4 finals. If you can come up with a better team without using players that started the all ireland please let me know...

    David Herity
Kieran Joyce Noel Hickey Canice Hickey
John Dalton Paddy Hogan James Ryall
    Cha Fitzpatrick Michael Fennelly
Colin Fennelly TJ Reid Willie O’Dwyer
Michael Grace Martin Comerford Eoin Reid

    Waterford or Tipperary.

It has to be Cork of course. The team 2003- 2006 were unreal. They should have won at least 3 All Irelands they appeared in if not 4. They threw away the 2003 final to KK and even played better than KK that day. Hammered KK in 2004 and beat Galway in 2005. KK were the better team in 2006 but that game was still there for the taking. They only lost by three points. They were the only team to beat KK in an All Ireland and the closest team to beat KK the two years they lost to them.

It has to be Cork. Although Waterford beat them in a couple of memorable Munster Finals, Cork also beat Waterford in 2 AI semis, a Munster Final and a Munster semi final. They also won back to back AI's and would have done 3 in a row where it not for a Kilkenny team who were just coming into their stride.

Has to be Cork. There shouldn't even be a doubt about that.

It's who was 3rd best really, well that might be a debate worth an argument!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 324 ✭✭Johnnyjump

Stupid question. You need only ask who is the third best. Second is Cork by a long stretch, not half as far behind KK as Cruiser would suggest.

    Have to agree with Stevecw

    Cork without a doubt.

Kills me to say that as a Deise man, we had some epic battles with the rebels this decade, its probably honours even in those particular battles but by virtue of their actual honours won Cork take it
