Cleaning Gaggia Classic steam wand

Does anyone know how to remove the steam wand from a Gaggia Classic to give it a good old clean ? There's a nut where it joins the body of the machine but last time I loosened it nothing happened.

Every so often I soak the wand in boiling water in a feeble attempt to clean it but I'm sure it could benefit from a really good clean. It's pretty hard to do that when it's stuck to the machine.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

My Gaggia Classic came to me with the Silvia steam wand mod already done, but I don't think that changes anything. When I removed the wand to clean it, I undid the nut and then gradually worked the wand loose: it's a tight fit! Don't lose the tiny rubber seal!

It just screws off, should be easy enough to do.

Cleaning the inside of the wand is done when descaling your machine which should be done every 3/4 months(of course depending how often you use the machine) and for the outside giving it a wipe with a clean damp cloth after each use should suffice. You could make up a little bit of descaler solution put it in a jug and immerse the wand in it every now and again if you want. There should really be no need to remove the whole wand from the machine to keep it clean.

BTW I have a Rancillo Silvia steam wand i'd sell if anyone wanted to do the Silvia steam wand mod on their Classic ect. I bought it before I found out the new Gaggia Baby Class machines steam wands attach to the body in a completly different way to the previous models meaning you cannot do the mod on them.

If you have the 'turbo frother' sleeve still on, that unscrews quite easily and also pulls apart. You'll probably find a load of milky crud underneath!

BTW, while the sleeve is off try moving that red rubber ring down a notch. I've found it makes a big difference with steaming the milk.
