Lost fat but not moobs?

    Hey guys,

I have a question about the damned man boobs or moobs :)

Two years ago I was overweight, not massively so but definitely had a big gut - didn't even really fully realise it at the time but when I see photos I took back (I took them with top off to track progress), then I'm like wow, I really was fat.

Two years on I have a flat belly and the makings of a six pack. Thing is though, the moobs don't seem to have reduced at all. They have been there for years and haven't reduced at all. So, I reckon if I went to get a six pack they would still be there!

Anyone have any experience of this - I have a little more fat to lose but I don't think this will make any noticeable difference to them, and I want them gone (or reduced as much as possible). I am thinking of scheduling a consultation with the Dundrum clinic as I have heard good things. I am thinking that it is the case that there is just some tough tissue there that won't go away by itself......

    Any advice?

Something basic but have you tried exercises that target your pectorals? Like pushups or bench pressing?

OP you may find more answers in the Fitness forum. Would you like this thread moved there?

I was just thinking of asking you that! Thought there might be a bit more of a response here than there has been.

That'd be great if you could move it there - thanks a lot.

the first question you'll get asked over there is what kind of training are you doing?

Shifting fat and building muscle is about working the whole body a lot of the time.

The majority of my workouts are total body ones - squats/bodyweight squats, deadlifts, bench presses, push-ups, dumbbell rows. For cardio I run outdoors, use the stationary bike, and use the cross-trainer. I also do high-intensity interval workouts. Plus I walk pretty much everywhere (don't have a car either).

Just an aside, the fitness forum doesn't allow anon posting...

One of the major misconceptions about weight loss is that you can "spot reduce". People often say things like "oh I'm happy with my weight I just want to lose some fat off my face / arms / belly / moobs" and look for specific excercises.

    It doesn't work like that.

You will lose weight across your entire body but not always uniformly. I have heard it said that first on is last to go but I don't know if that has been proven to be true. If you really want to lose the Moobs then keep your diet clean and do lots of exercise. What you do actually isn't that important. What is important is the intensity (mid range, not so light there is no effort not so hard you're destroyed in a few minutes) and consistency. You *must* excercise regularly; 3 - 4 times per week. To do that it should be something you enjoy; weights, running, rowing, swimming, cycling - whatever.

Keep track of calories in (food, drink) and calories out (excercise and base needs). I have seen figures as low as 200 and up to 500 per day deficit. Experiment with it and see what works for you.

Doing chest specific excercises will not work - you'll develop a layer of muscle under the fat and look pretty much the same. Work on losing the last of the excess weight through diet and excercise and you'll be grand. Surgery really should only be a last resort and if your moobs are made up of breast tissue, which is very rare and should really only be considered after a consultation with a medical professional. I'd start with your GP who will be able to refer you if it's needed

I actually did mention it to my doc who took a look and said that he thought he could feel some tissue there - I don't reckon it is as rare as you say though, gyno seems fairly common among adult males.. He asked could I lose some more weight and I said of course - this is nearly a year back now though and I am definitely slimmer now than I was when I saw him and the moobs don't look much different.

I will definitely be aiming to lose another approx 5kg in fat, see if that makes any dent in it. I guess it is just a bit frustrating to have a flat belly with increasing definition - but with soft looking moobs!

It is usually the last bits of fat that are the hardest to lose. When you start exercising you get a burst of fat loss simply because your body gets a huge shock, you eat clean, exercise more than ever and the metabolism ramps up, melting the fat away. As you get fitter, it's harder to burn the last bits away as your metabolism is already good and you don't have to work so hard so will take longer. Get rid of that last 5 Kg and if the moobs are still there then go back to your doctor.

    Hey lads,

Cheers for the well thought out posts. You pretty much said what I had been thinking myself, I'm gonna just lose a few more kgs and see where I stand then.
