    Folks,

Need some advice. My wife is buying a car and a friend has found the following. He's looking for 6,700 for it but the father in law is saying its too expensive:

    Ford Focus 05 1.6 TDCi
    5 door
Alloys, Air Con, Electric Windows, etc.
    Full Ford Service History
    4 new tyres
    90,000 miles on the clock.
    Car is immaculate

almost 7 grand is a bit steep, 90k is high mileage for a 3.5 yr old car. (IMO only obviously) Might try and use this to knock a bit more off the price. I wouldnt pay any more than €6k for it.

Your father in law has no idea what he's talking about. Have a look at the results on carzone for the same spec car here

I know! I think its a great price to be honest, but I know nothing about cars. Cars of the same spec are coming in around 9k on carzone.

I think for less you should be able to get the same car with the milleage cut in half.

Average yearly milleage is 12 k first year, 11 k every year after.

On a diesel car? Ive never driven less than 20k average in my diesel.

I would say 20k per annum is well above average, which is generally quoted as 12k per year.

    Even for a diesel car?

20k per year for a diesel is nothing. Also what type of milage would your wife be doing? IPt could work out that she will do less than the adverage for a couple of years and put a mor "adverage milage" on the car.

Hi OldmanMondeo, shed be driving from Monivea to Ballinasloe and back. A round trip of about 50 to 60 miles per day Id say.
Shes just looking for something to get her through this year for now as she currently drives a Yaris and its too light for that mileage. If she sold her Yaris she'd only have to back it 3k for this car. But her father is putting her off it. We've had 2 mechanics take a look at it and they both agreed its a fabulous car. I just wanted to be sure before I ticked off the father in law :)

2 mechanic have said the car is good, there are a load of older Focus still on the roads, 2 good signs. The price seems right, good 3rd point. Now if the Wife likes the car and your happy with it, go for it.

Matter of interest what does the FIL recommend?

edit, sounds like a good car for the trips. 1.6TDCi, cheap road tax, cheap to run.

Wife loves it. The car is spotless, lovely alloys, air con and drives really nice. Its a big step up from the Yaris but she's more protection in this car than the Yaris. Personally, I think its a great looking car and great to drive. No knocks from the stearing or any sounds from the engine.
It has Full Ford Service History also which is a good sign.

The FIL reckons its too expensive for the mileage and she should wait longer before getting a car. I had a look on carzone and a car with similar spec and mileage is asking 9,500.

AFAIK they always used to say 10-12,000 miles per annum was the average, so I'd think 16-18,000KMs is about right, and that 20K isn't really that high at all.

Then get that car. Even allowing 20% over pricing on carzone you are still getting a good price by about 1k.

Focus 1.6 TDCi was available in two different states of tune, 90bhp and 110bhp. Most LX or Zetec models had the 90bhp, Ghia had the 110bhp version. I had a 05 Focus Ghia TDCi for 2 years and traded it in March, I was allowed around €8,500 for it trade-in. It had about 80k miles on the clock, it's a Peugeot/Citroen engine and they are generally very reliable.

If the car is in good condition with no issues then I'd say offer no higher than €6500 for it.

If the Mechanics reckon its a minter and you like it go for it!!
€6500 is a good price, and 90K miles is bang on for a diesel.
You wont avail of cheaper road tax as said above as it will be taxed as a 1.6 and not by emmissions but it will be cheap to run and it is a nice drive.
At that money i definintly wouldnt be afraid of it!

Thanks folks. Feeling alot better about it now. Its a mint of a car and she really loves it.
