County Down

Myself and the brothers are planning a weekend golfing trip to county down in November. We hope to play 3 or 4 courses over 2 or 3 days. Anyway, just wondering whether anybody has any good suggestions as to which courses to play? Ideally we're looking for places that will be in reasonable condition in Winter and that are reasonably priced although we'll happily pay a premium for top-quality (e.g. Royal County Down) if it's worth it.

Also, does anybody know of any packages or special offers that operate in Down?

Don't know of any deals but I imagine if you look on http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/golfing/ you might find something. Failing that, once you've picked out your courses, give them a call and ask them if they have any deals (accommodation/golf passports/open days).

Courses I'd recommend are RCD obviously enough, and the second course there is called Annesley/Mourne Golf Club - it's short and quirky and is a great warm up for the big course. Ardglass is up the road and has some spectacular holes. Parkland courses - the nearest 'quality' ones are Spa and Kilkeel, but you also have Concra Wood and Greenore south of the border. If you decide to go further north in Co. Down I'd recommend Clandeboye (Dufferin course) - it's a beauty - and even Bangor. My personal favourite is the extremely tough Scrabo, but it will wear you out if you're cramming in a lot of golf.

If you want some cheap and quirky courses, let me know.

Thanks for that Kevin. I'm meaning to pick up your book, but in the meantime, your willingness to share your tips is a credit to you.

Depends how far you want to travel.

    RCD is a must.

Ardglass is a nice course and Kilkeel is nearby.

Downpatrick and Spa are fairly reasonably priced and are a medium standard.

In North Down and Belfast you have Clandeboye (good drainage if wet especially the smaller Ava course......the Dufferin is harder but both are different and well worth trying). Bangor is pretty decent. Scrabo (my pet hate but play it anyway). In Belfast you've got Malone, Knock, Shandon Park, Belvoir Park.

On the way back down you could try Lisburn.

None of the above will disappoint you as all are good.
