Guys i signed up with smart on thursday their sending out a wifi modem in 10 days. I didn't want to wait that long so i thought i'd try my old Netopia modem. All the lights on the modemshow i'm connected but it's not letting the computer connect to the net. When i use windows diagnose problem it says the DNS can't find www.microsoft.com.

You will have to enter Smart's settings into your modem. Maybe if you ring tech support they will help. Or they may be on the Smart website. I changed my modem recently (UTV) and found the relevant settings on their site.

I can't see were they show their settings. Also i can pick up an eircom wireless network when the modem is on and it goes away when i switch it off so it is definitly our network but i can't for the life remember the pass key. Is there any way i can reset it and set it up with new pass key???

Try logging in to the router through an ethernet cable. Type 192.168.0.254 in the address bar of your browser. Then use open DNS as your servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.220.

jay it wont let me go in on 192.168.0.254. this has me completely stumped. see when i change the DNS do i do anything to the IP settings?

Depending which router model you have, changing the settings for Primary DNS server and Secondary DNS server can varie it might be under advanced - expert - configuration - DNS. Have a look and see where these options are and change them as specified.

That just means your didn't connect to your router eircom is just the ssid. A name that is broadcasted through your router to enable you to see it wirelessly.

There is the settings for smart

Smart uses unique Username and Passwords as far as I remember.

Your modem is probably still set to use eircom/broadband1 for connecting.

The DNS settings shouldn't matter too much.

Exactly. To log on to Smart you will need a username and password which they will give you. DNS is irrelevant in this particular situation.

Also if you only signed up on Thursday you may not even be switched over to Smart yet.

Without the username and password for Smart, you're going nowhere. I don't know if they'll give you this over the phone, they may or may not.
