What should I do?

For the past 10 days or so there's been a car parked outside my (terraced) house. It hasn't moved once, has a lot of dents and scrapes on one side and all the doors are unlocked. To the casual observer it looks like it has been stolen and abandoned.

So last week when I was said casual observer I decided to ring the Gardai to report it and at least get it moved away as it's taking up a parking space. So they check it out over the phone and to my surprise the car is not stolen but registered to a resident two doors down. I don't have a clue who lives there and I've only moved in within the last 8 weeks so am not too familiar with the neighbours cars yet. He recommends I knock on their door to let them know the car is unlocked. I try but there's no answer.

So, that was last week, Tuesday or Wednesday. The car is still there. It hasn't moved yet. The doors are still unlocked. I've tried several more times to inform the neighbour but there's never an answer at the door.

What should I do next, if anything? I'm just trying to help them out so the car doesn't get robbed but it seems something sinister is up. I think it's highly unlikely they went on holidays leaving the car completely unlocked.

Does it have a insurance or tax disc?

    Yup, all up to date.

Steal their car. That way you get your parking space back and you get a free car.

Take out the tax and insurance, take the plates, call the council.

Maybe the owner is on holidays?

Since they won't open the door, add them on Facebook and leave a post on their wall, telling them the car is unlocked.

Car is unlocked you say? Take of the handbrake and push it back to their own house. Simples.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,231 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

Take out the tax and insurance, take the plates, take the corpse out of the boot, commit necrophilia, call the council.

I could possibly - I'm not so worried about space as I ride a motorbike but the whole thing just seems a little odd to me.

Much like most problems in my life I would solve it by banning it for 7 days for personal abuse. I wonder if my girlfriend will come back on tuesday...

Maybe they are away on holiday and that's why you are not getting an answer at the door.

They might be hiding in their house and trying to avoid you. Burn down their house. If they're inside then they'll have to come out and confront you. If not you get to see a house burn down.

Release the handbrake and push it up to outside their house!

Edit:Was beaten to it by everyone

I guess it's possible but leaving all four doors unlocked is more than a little careless. It would also indicate (assuming the car doesn't have central locking) that four people got out of the car and all of them left their doors unlocked.

Kidnap their first born child and then sacrifice him to Sekhmet, the Egyptian God of destruction to appease him. Sekhmet will then destroy the car and you are free to enjoy your parking space.

Picture this. Member of your family calls to your door next week and get no reply. Garda are called and force entry, but nothing is amiss. They say you may have gone on holiday, As a crime is not suspected, no-one notices the slight blood stains leading from your door to the boot of the old battered car outside. Also un-noticed was the twitching of the curtains in the house 2 doors down, or the muffled laughter from within.

    Leave it alone !!

Well as you said there was a lot of scrapes and dents on one side maybe they left it open on purpose and went off on holiday hoping it would be stolen.

They might be trying to scam the insurance.

a 04 corsa would probably have central locking tbh.

    Follow this simple step:
    • call cops again, tell them you spotted a suspect device in said car.

= Army bomb squad turning up to carry out a controlled explosion of suspect device.

    = Problem solved!

Couldn't you just open the door, lock it, and close it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,494 ✭✭✭citizen_p

i say you rob it and repair all the dings and scrapes and park it up across town to teach him not to leave his doors unlocked....

I might just go ahead and do that but it doesn't mean case closed.

The suave solution in this difficulty for the modern urbanite is to tow the car to a far off completely random location. It could be weeks or years before your opponent finds their car. And then if they have the cheek to park on a public road near your home again - who knows where their car is moved to next time ??? Could be anywhere ???

I've thought about it myself a few times:pac:

Maybe the owner died while in the bath and nobodies found him.

You should kick in the door and check it out, and if he is dead you can take the car with a clear conscience

If its a dead woman, ring Turd Ferguson. There may be a reward.

throw a party in the car. you could fit a good 5 maybe 6 at a squeeze in it

Hide pieces of raw fish all over the car & lock all the doors. After a few days, it will begin to really stink in there and they'll never be able to get the smell out. That will make them think twice about parking their car outside your house again.
