Medicine grading across different colleges

    Hi guys,

    Just a quick question for anyone doing medicine. I'm currently in final year UCD and we are assessed using a 50% gradescale. Just wondering if it's the same in the other med schools in Ireland (eg; RCSI, Trinity, Galway, Cork, Limerick)?

    sorry i dont have the answer to your Q but i was wondering if you could tell me what the medicine course is like.. is it really hard and impossible? or is it managable if you put the work in?. also does it make any difference what college you study it in? and anything else which may help me to decide whether to do it or not.. thanks:confused:

    Hey there,

    Well first off, don't be put off by the workload. The first few years are no harder than any other course and if you put in a few hours study every week from the start you'll not only get by but you'll probably do pretty well. It's only in the last 2 years that it gets pretty intense; by that stage it'll be all clinical (in the hospital) and a lot more enjoyable.

    As for where to do it, how often do you want to go home? You'll be able to go home pretty much every week in 1st-3rd year if you want but after that you'll be a lot busier...A lot of people traditionally aimed for the Dublin colleges to gain entry to the Dublin hospitals, but I think anybody will soon be able to apply to these even if they studied outside Dublin. (some kind of application changes are being made I think)

    Personally I'm in UCD, and I can say that the teaching standards, facilities and experience are top notch, however the administration leaves a lot to be desired. They've recently changed the course though so I'm sure that'll all improve in the near future.

    At the end of the day it's down to personal choice. If you like science (especially biology and chemistry, but there's no maths!) and working as part of a team you'll love it. The workload can be a bit daunting at times but it's definitely manageable.

    Anyways, hope that was some help. Good luck with the leaving cert, and remember list your CAO choices in the order of what you really want to do!
