Can anyone give me info on english setters? Do they make a good family pet? And also do they shed? My previous dog shed all year round! So looking for something that sheds once or twice a year if possible! Thanks in advance:)

Generally brilliant family pets - do need a good lot of exercises as they are energetic and mental stimulation to keep them amused, can have separation anxiety so best not left alone too long. Tend to be very good with kids and adults alike.

They do shed all year round, not as much as, say, a St. Bernard but they do shed. Because their coat is mostly white the hair shows up on everything medium or dark in colour (clothes etc.). If they are brushed regularly they tend to be ok though. Think of a larger Springer Spaniel as far as shedding is concerned.

    :)

Hey Elainee, Have a 12 week old English Setter. Super dog so far. Does shed but nothing crazy. More an outdoor dog than a house dog though. Full of energy very friendly and clingy especially when a puppy. Needs loads of excercise but very intelligent. Have my lad sitting, lying down staying etc. etc. Growing fast and will be a big medium to large sized dog.

Pointers and setters are bred as pets or usually bred for shooting and field trials. If you get a pup from these shooting strains they will be very athletic, tend to be very curious and energetic and a bit wilder :).
