    Hi,

just looking for some advice on a wages issue
Lets say your employer makes some changes to your role. You earned a certain amount of money in your initial role, but you will be getting less in your new role. The thing is that the starting salary hasnt changed, but in the initial role you had to be on-call for a certain amount of hours which was of course paid for, so this bumped up your wages.
In the new role, there is no on-call required so in effect you will be earning less....does this constitute a change in pay or does the fact that the starting salary remains the same mean that the employer doesnt need to ask about you taking a reduction in pay?

    hope ive explained this ok

    thanks;)

New role should mean new contract with new role name and the salary etc. stipulated.

If this is a change to an existing role and hence no new role name it would depend on the contract. If the contract stated that you would have to do X amount hours on call a month it would require a contract change; if it said something along the lines of "possibly doing on call duty" then it would not.

In my last company (unionised), I was on call and I don't believe there was compensation if you stopped being on call, regardless of a change in contract.

As Nody said, the contract said "might be required to be on call" or something like that. I would see this the same as overtime - if a company can reduce your OT, then they can reduce or stop your on call.

Anyhow, first call of port is to examine the contract carefully.

I work for a US company and they have a policy whereby any lateral move in the company will not affect your basic pay i.e. no increase or decrease. It could be something like that.

I had an acting up allowance for 2 years- before I was moved sideways into a role with the same title as my basic job. My gross pay is now over 40% less than it was previously- however my basic pay is the exact same....... Its tough- but there isn't anything you can do about it......... If you want a silver lining- you're paying less tax........
