I have a bunch of .avi files that I used to be able to open with QT, but can't any more with QTX.
Most avi files I can open fine, there are just a small number that don't work.
QT freezes on "Loading Movie" and I have to Force Quit.
iPhoto also seems to freeze when I try to import them.
VLC has no probs playing them.
Anyone any ideas on how I can investigate?

Are you using Perian to play the files back in QuickTime? I haven't had any problems so far, though these days I mostly have .mkv files rather than .avi ones...

You could try looking at the detailed info of the videos that are causing the problem with a utility like MediaInfo:

    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download/Mac_OS

You might be able to then figure out if the files failing are encoded with specific video or audio settings and that would really help in troubleshooting...

You may need to download plug ins for QTX that you did for QT7

    Thanks guys,

I did download the plugins again, and some avi files to work.
I will download MediaInfo and see if I can figure out anything with that.
