You don't need the O2 SIM to jailbreak and then unlock. Once the phone is unlocked, you can just pop in your Meteor SIM and away you go...

Officially, you need to activate the phone via iTunes with the O2 SIM (that's probably why it doesn't work yet) but jailbreaking essentially bypasses the activation, so there's no reason to do it.

    Thanks for that!

Can you also tell me when I go to unlock the phone with purplera, my phone keeps going into RESTORE mode?
Can anyone please advise how I can install Cydia???

    Thanks again

Jailbreaking installs Cydia - it's part of the process. It needs to, because Cydia is then used to install everything else, including ultrasn0w which carries out the unlock.

I'm on a Mac and using Pwnage tool, so things are a bit different but really any effective jailbreak will require you put the phone into restore mode (DFU mode) and from there, it installs or modifies the phone's firmware, installing Cydia in the process. Are you sure the phone is going into restore mode (connect to iTunes logo appears on screen) as this can be a bit tricky the first time you try it?

    What instructions are you following?

Did the jailbreak work at all? Can you "slide to unlock" the phone and access the home screen? Cydia may have ended up on the second screen by default, slide to the right to check if you haven't already.

Please remember not to update to firmware 3.1 as the latest OS can't be jailbroken for now. Only OS 3.0.1 or earlier can be jailbroken.

    omg i have 3.1 firmware!

Is there any way yet to get around this?

What's my best option? Wait and see if the guys on the unlock websites or should I just sign up with O2 for a few weeks?

    Thanks

nope you cannot jailbreak or unlock if you have 3.1.

also people need to remember the phone needs to be activated with an official carrier sim to allow push notifications, once the phone is activated with an official carrier sim, you can use another carrier sim provided you've jailbreaked and unlocked the phone.

Sorry to correct you but if you have 3.1 you simply need to install 3.0 on the iPhone.

Then install the Jailbreak software. Then install the unlock software.

There are step by step guides on this forum including links to the 3 seperate pieces of software.

but doesn't the 3.1 software also update the baseband and thus blocking all the current holes in the baseband that's in the baseband that's on a phone with 3.0 or 3.0.1.

please correct me, it's the only way i know for future, what we want to do is give the OP the most correct information :).

You're correct, updating to 3.1 updates the baseband and you're boned, possibly for good - here's what the iPhone Dev Team had to say about it:
Jailbreaking and unlocking have two different security mechanisms, and if you update your 3GS (or 3G) to 3.1, you will lose your carrier unlock, possibly forever. Even if you downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0, you will have lost your carrier unlock. So if you think you’ll ever want to carrier unlock your 3G or 3GS (or maybe give it away or resell it later as an unlockable iPhone), then please stay clear of all official Apple IPSWs. You’ll soon be able to create custom 3.1 IPSWs using PwnageTool that let you pre-hack your 3.1 update in a way that preserves the carrier unlock.

To be honest, I'd wait for the free version to become available, as at least you'll have more of a community to assist with any issues, should they arise.

I agree with RSAEire. Wait for the free version from the Dev-Team or Geohot. You can give them a donation for their good work then as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if that crowd you linked to are just charging for the dev teams work.

Or it could just be a scam
