    Hi (mod) hope i'm positing this in the right place

    Hello, How many cigarettes can i bring back with me from Spain. Customs in UK allow 3200 and in Ireland they only allow 800!!!??? I rang customs and they said the 800 number was indicitive - i.e. you could bring more if you could prove they're for personal use. I asked how do you prove they're for personal use and the person in customs told me it depends on what officer is on, he'll see from talking to you!!!!! This seems bizarre and ridiculous. Can anybody shed light..

    It's 800 though some posters here have taken in much more but passed through the red channel to declare them. Once the officer was convinced that they were for personal use they were allowed to keep them.

    By being polite; By not giving the impression that you intend to sell them; By being open and frank; By not giving them an excuse to take them from you.

    The same way you would convince a bouncer to allow you into a nightclub that they have every right of preventing you from entering :)
